View Full Version : Where can I take a look at a Caledonia Yawl?

It seems that I'm becoming a fan of Iain Oughtred's Caledonia Yawl. Does anyone know where I can look at one in the New York City vicinity? Pictures are one thing, but a real tangible boat is another :-)

I'll probably be going to the Maryland Small-Craft Festival in a couple of weeks -- does anyone know if there will be any Caledonia Yawls there?

Their might be other online resources also -- so google away!

Call Geoff Kerr at Two Daughters Boatworks in Vermont, 802-8496579. He might be going to St Michaels, but Westford, VT is closer.

I share the same predicament, I have been looking at every picture and website about the caledonia yawl I can find, but I would like to see one directly. I am building a John Brooks "ellen" as my first project, but I am already dreaming about the next one and the caledonia yawl is at the top of my list. The "ellen" is a nice design and perfect project to learn the art but a bit small for what I finally want. Is there any oportunity to see a CY somewhere in Texas or in the neighborhood?

You have a good chance of seeing a CY at St Michaels. Here's a shot showing from right to left, a Ness yawl, a CY and a Bill Clements' built double ender. I think it is the Nord Koster. All three worth a good look.

Yes, the double-ender on the left is a Nord Koster. Always one of the most beautiful boats at St. Michaels. Designed by Mr. Philip C. Bolger.

Anybody know if plans for Nord Koster are available from Bolger or Clements? I think I contacted Clements once but I don't recall getting a response.

A couple of years ago I asked him about plans and he did respond with a cost per sheet. The cost ended up near $250. I don't remember how many sheets there were, but there were enough for me to believe they were quite detailed. I'd try to contact him again

Y'all forgot all about me? ;)

Elisabeth Grace lives in Texas now. Texas is big. Where are you?

Hey, Wayne, good to hear from you. Looks like you're well out of the swamp now. The CY is high on my "wish list" too, although after getting Iain's design catalog, I'm leaning more towards the Ness Yawl, it's supposed to row better. Still, I have no idea how to sail a yawl - I'm still learning on my lug-rigged Penobscot. Would you be willing to give a "test drive" to a couple of folks from Galveston County?

Hi Al!

I remember that you're in the Houston-Galveston area. I work in NW Houston, where Beltway 8-290-FM 529 come together. I'm in Houston 2-3 weekends a month. When I'm not working 7 days a week I would like to see and maybe sail on your boat.

As for a test ride on Elisabeth Grace, sure. Unfortunately she is 250 miles or 4 hours north of the office, about 25 miles north of Tyler. I'm sure we can figure out a time to all get together.
