I'm thinking of building my first sail boat, a little daysailer that I can practice in alone and take the family out on little trips (two adults, plus maybe 2 kids). Maybe even take it out on overnight trips in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. I want something easy to build, easy to sail for a beginner, and of course looks good. I'm particularly interested in the Chesapeake Marine Design Windward 15:

Can anyone share their experience building and sailing this boat? Thanks.

A couple of us have built Karl's Windward 15. I launched 'Blue Moon' 5 years ago this month (I was shaping the mast on the morning of September 11). We had a blue moon that month, hence the name. I have sailed her on the Chesapeake, in Maine, on Lakes Erie and Keuka as well as small lake and ponds in Pennsylvania. She went together without much fuss, though, hosestly, I see no advantage to ply on frame over stitch & glue constuction; the W15 could be built either way.
Blue Moon is very easy to rig for sailing: 15 minutes TOPS at either end, though a shallow ramp requires manually pushing her off the trailer. She is fun to sail and the single spritsail is simplicity itself. I only wish she had a rig that could stow inside the boat; the long mast extends over the bow and stern while trailering, so there is no way to cover the boat except with a big tarp.
Doug Wilde is another forum member that has built a W15 'Wiliwaw' is I recall correctly. He has some realy nice photos that helped me a great deal during my building.
I'll have my boat at the MASCF this weekenf in St. Michael's, Maryland, weather permitting. I doubt you will be there though, if you live in the Pacific Northwest. Rick
