View Full Version : designer identity sought
Good Day,
I have been searching for the designer of this sailboat but having little success. She was built in Oakville Ontario in 1924. I am hoping to restore/ replicate her if I can find the original lines. As you can see in the photos her present state is a long way from how she looked in the older pictures(1950s). I would love to bring her back as her history in this area is strong, at one point being the only sailboat in the area. Any ideas as to the designer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
BMH

Looks a bit like the boats they sail on the Norfolk Broads, but that odd bow.........

If you can post her dimensions I'll look in my Llyods registy (1939) and see if she shows up. Any previous names would be a great help as there are 6500+ entries. I can't make her name out from the photo, is it FREYA? I will not be home until middle of next week!

From what I see, I might imagine that this is a boat designed by Ted Geary of Seattle. However that is just a wild speculation.

BMH;
Possibly a Sonder boat. You can read an article here:
http://www.herreshoff.org/images/1985-1995/1992_p1.pdf
I believe WB Magazine did an article on these boats so you may want to try a search of their back issues.
Just a guess.
Earl
PS; Check WB issues 73,85,131 and 132.

Thinking she's a lake scow. Maybe saw something like her in Schoettle's SAILING CRAFT
Tony
The boats name is the Adanac. She has had no others that I am aware of.
Her dimensions are as follows:
LOA 25'9"
LWL 18'6"
BEAM 7'4"
Draft 3'9"
These were taken off some sketches by the previous owner.
She was originally gaff rigged.
Thanks

The Ted Geary designs are very interesting and I will do some more reading about them.

The sonder class boats look very similar. A wonderful search. I will continue looking along these lines. My Wooden Boat magazine collection consists of the Oct. issue. Though I am working on remedying that.

Will put Schoettle's SAILING CRAFT on my order list at our local library. This gets longer almost daily.
Thank all of you for your direction. It looks like I have some enjoyable work ahead following these up.
Best Regards,

Sorry for the delay, I scan through my copy of Lloyds and did not see any boat by that name or close to that size that would fit. I'll try again to make sure and report back to you.
Thanks Tony,
I have been looking into the boatyards operating around that time. There are references to Andrew's Shipyard (James Andrew builder of the Canada, the Minota and the Beaver, Frederic Nicholls builder of the Crusader and the Oakville Yacht Building Company in the 1920s. There was also a mention of Rickie Brothers. If the builders are recorded in the Lloyds I hope this may help. I appreciate the effort.

Jay I'm about half way through my second pass in the Lloyds regitry that I have(1939) and I did come across a boat built at the Oakville Yacht builing Company, LTD. she does not match but her buider was listed as T.B.F. Benson. Possibly some one with the new Encylcopedia of Yacht designers could come up with some thing on him, I'll keep looking for any thing that comes close to your size and year. Tony

Seeing a full profile that shows the keel would be a help. I did identify a simular looking boat several years ago as a Geary design. Perhaps you might contact Scott Rohre at the Seattle Center For Wooden Boats. He is very knowledgable concerning Geary Boats.

Thanks for the effort; I am still trying to find out when Andrew's Shipyard became Oakville Yacht Building Company. It seems to have happened right around this time. Will contact the historical society for some books about the harbour they have of this time frame.

Here are the profile shots you requested. If the boat isn’t too badly buried in snow (12-14" since Friday) I will try for some others. The Polaroid’s were from here last paint repaint in the 70's. I will follow up on the lead you gave me and much appreciated.

Retract my earlier opinion, I think scows are not keelboats, didn't see the keel in the early shots. I hope you're having fun.
I just received my first lot of Woodenboat Magazines from Ebay, 47 issues. The unfortunate part is that is one of the missing issues. Though 132 has a bit about them. I have been having some interesting results from Google typing in "sonderklasse boot" and using the translate feature. Beautiful boats. They seem to be to long and narrow for the most part though the American designs are supposed to be beamier. I haven’t found too much about these though. Another good search has been "L-Boot"; these are some 30 sqm designs that show some potential as a match. I will look into these further.

Sent an Email off to Scott Rohre last night. We will see what develops.

BMH, I'm down near Horseshoe Valley if you ever need a hand. I have a couple of projects on the go, if you ever want to drop in.
WillW
Nice to find someone close to home. What are you building? I would be interested in checking out your projects. As to needing a hand, I have a lot to do before I get to that point. I still need to finish drawing my garage/shop plans so I have a place to work. The original 20x24 is now up to a 24x32 with attic shop. Hope to pour in the spring.
Drop me a private message as to how to contact you.
