I have an oppurtunity to have (free) a 1955 S&S designed, built by Robert Derector, 37 ft. Gulfstream sloop. It has been totally gutted of any interior, hull appears pretty good, deck is new , engine good, sails and rigging supposedly in storage. I went thru it briefly today and am very impressed with the quality Derector put into it, cast bronze floors, butt block that are almost a work of art, bronze straps on the inboard side of the frames taking the the most extreme band to help prevent breaking. Wonderfull workmanship!! It has been in a shed for about 4 years now while the owner has been rebuilding it. He recently died and the heirs, not knowing or wanting to know anything about boats, just want it and its associated yard bills to go away. Before I accept or decline the offer, does anybody know of or has heard of this particular design. Apparently several were built to this design.

Dale,
I know about the Gulfstream 36 series built by Derektor. There was also a Gulfstream 30 and a 42, but I don't know about a 37. You can get nice historical information from S&S here:

Note that this includes a picture of Beowolf, a 36, in Rock Hall. Too much to expect that this is the same boat, I guess...

Nice looking boat!
I see that the super gulfstream 36 is actually 37 ft in the advertisement.

Derecktor's own WILD GOOSE, pictured on the website you included under BOATS, had a very unusual rudder arrangement with exterior mounted cables through turning blocks near the waterline. She was moored and stored here for some years and I was never clear on the intent or advantage.

Uncle Duke, You are correct the boat in question is a Gulfstream 36 not 37. I knew it was a Gulfstream and since it was 37' LOA I mistakenly assumed it was a Gulfstream 37. I don't know its name but am doing further research.

I took care of several of his aluminum power boats and ran one of his 70 footers for a while. The only thing that I can come up with, concerning the rudder rigging, was that maybe he has a big auxillary power plant under the cockpit, and had no room to work the rudder system. Huckins had outboard rudders and rigging on their early motoryachts. Both folks had a "way" about them, which seems to go along with the custom folks.:D

Did you read this line? I like this quote from Olin Stephens .

somewhat offset by Bob's cavalier attitude toward the plans he was supposed to follow

Oh well, figured I woulds check in to see what had happened in the boat section. But for now, gotta run, have fun with the boats guys. Later

Dale I'm out of town until middle of next week, but then i can send you some names and addresses of Gulf Stream owners that belong to the S&S association for your questions. It would be a good catch to aquire!

Given that I don't have to do the work, I'll say you'd be foolish not to avail yourself of the opportunity IF you have a place to do the work, the desire to do the work (or the money for both of the former), and you want the finished product. It looks like a marvelous design and it's one heck of a jump-start on a build-it-from-plans project of its magnitude
