I was just offered FREE yard space for a boat restoration project. Considering that here in So-Cal that would cost $120 per DAY for a 40 foot boat, I'm jumping on the oportunity. Now I just need the right boat. Any of you brothers (or sisters) know of a worthwhile project hull, sail or power, say 28 to 45 ish feet, In Southern California (will consider travel to Bay area for the right boat). Cash buyer$$$. If idle hands are the devils' workshop, I'm the foreman! dp

Can we be just a teensy bit more specific? What are you looking for, and what are the transport limitations?

Try checking Craigslist SF Bay area -- lots of listings show up there.

How about this? -

Thanks for the Craigs list suggestion. I never remember that. More specific...No! I don't know what I want. Nice problem to have. In my mind I think I want a down east style express/lobster yacht type. Or, I had the fortune to step aboard the new Apreamare; totally unaffordable for me (I have to keep this under $100k in 5 years) So if I could find a good looking, older lifeboat or whaleboat type hull, replace engine and customize interior, I imagine a "poor mans" version of that. I guess I'm expecting the right boat to find me. dp

I'll give you a hint...

Every 40 foot wooden boat is a project. ;) :D

My advice would be to patrol the major websites, and dial in the things you want.. ie.. price and length, power, age etc. I do it all the time, looking for my next boat. (I ain't finished with this one god knows but..) It also lets me keep abreast of prices and conditions. In my mind, you could spend say..30k and buy a boat that was fairly good, thereby cutting down the project times and the money required to update the boat.

Tried ebay but got mostly "gravy boats". Katherine, what discription should I use. Also, thanks to PMJ. Ladyben and Boneyyard are awesome. Thanks also for the "hint". This will be my 13th major restoration (lucky) project so I'm no stranger to hard work. dp

http://www.woodenboatrescue.org/ is worth watching too, but it looks like they are not (yet) getting much in from the West Coast...

Also, make sure you're in the eBay motors boat section, not regular eBay.
