Some of you have requested pictures of "Bright Star" so here are a few that were taken prior to our buying the boat. The boat was built in Barcelona Spain in 1960. We bought her two years ago. It had been kept covered for several seasons and had recieved no maintenance during that time. Although she looked good from a distance. A lot of work was in store for us! I will post pictures of the work in progress from time to time.

Ok guys, here's some more. We had to strip all the varnish. We spray stained with analine dye and put on ten coats or varnish. The deck house canvas was shot. We set new canvas in white lead, poured boiling water on it to shink same and applied "thin" oil based house paint directly on the wet canvas to set it.http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid217/p36cb357b59e08e34a4e0175b8cbd0596/ec5d7d36.jpg

Guys,
What is seen here is the begining of a two year, on going, restoration of "Bright Star". I have a lot of pictures but don't wish to bore you. So let me know if I should post more shots of the work being done?

It looks like she's the one pictured in "Sensible Cruising Designs" page 38.

Yes it is. We were very lucky in finding and getting the boat. It had been for sale for nearly three years and no one wanted it! We knew we had a lot of work to do but it has been a pleasure. Work is still in progress. We hope to step the masts in a few weeks. The main was broken so, we had to splice it.

Where was she when you bought her?

When we found her, she was located in Naples CA at a private dock near the Long Beach Shipyard.

Jay, is this a Gallart-built boat?

Yes, she was built in 1960 by Gallart Constructor Naval in Barcelona. "Bright Star" was the second H28 to be built by them. The origonal owner was W.S. Brayshaw of Babylon NY.

Jay,
That is a lovely looking boat. Did you spray the varnish as well?
Keep the picture coming.

We only applied the analine dye by spray. This was done to give as much transparency and snap to the grain pattern of the African mahogony as we could get. African does not have as much interesting grain variation as does Honduras, hence the extra tweeking of color.

Ok. More Photos.
The Stb. after end of the deck house had a rotten rail. It had been made in two pieces, leaked and rotted underneath.
I made the new rail of one solid piece of African mahogany. Then there was the leaking fuel tank that had to be replaced along with the gutters under the cockpit seats. The joints are mitered draw pin mortis & tennon with stop waters that can be taken apart should another tank problem come up.

Should I post photos on separate subjects so as to not end up with a lot off material on one message?
