Shark, yes it ends up 2 pieces and the base started out with 6. All grains shifted on the glue up. Shaw and Tenny wittled out the poles, they turned out great.

Hey, Dan, first off, happy belated birthday, Secondly, what sort of power are you going to use? Inboard/outboard/non at all?

Dave,
I have a Nissan 6hp 4 stroke outboard for now. Plans are to go electric and replace the 500lbs of lead pigs with batteries. I am a control electrician by trade and can handle that end of it. What I am trying to figure out is - how to get the tube through the keel. I was told by some builders up around Maine to place the tube beside the keel on a retrofit. Sounds fairly ok, but what about the drag? I know its not a sleek racer, and it probably dont matter. But I have time to think it through.

Dan, I like the idea of electric and battery ballast. I don't think you would notice any kind of difference in drag with a shaft tube alongside the keel, sounds like a good plan.

Have you seen these guys?

Dave,
Yes, I have seen those guys. So much to choose from. The technology is changing on the low voltage stuff, they are starting to wind low voltage ac motors now. A battery powered ac invertor drive would be pretty efficient and brushless too.

You can get a 6hp (100a at 48v) Mars ac motor, Sevcon PMAC inverter drive good for 200a all for <$1000.

This is the guts of the new Briggs & Stratton brushless electric outboard.

Actually, if you don't mind the appearance of the OB hanging out back you might consider the B&S motor. At $1800 it's less expensive than buying all the parts for an inboard installation and certainly a lot easier to install.
