How many of us are in the habit of having music playing while underway?

Youtube has had me watching a LOT of amateur sail-along videos lately, and I've started noticing that different folks have different approaches to the topic.

During our summer booze cruise schedule, we often have music on deck if conditions permit. The passengers seem to like it.

I sail both with and without music. It all depends upon the mood that I am in. ;)

Well as a new sailing video auture :D I find that the videos with just the sound of wind and water are not all that great sounding. It's odd but the wind just doesn't sounds like crrrrrssssssssfffffffffshhhhhhhhhh or even that freaking LOUD !!!! in real life. But man you put a recorder on and thats all you can hear. When I'm sailing even on the windiest day the sound of the wind is not nearly as annoying as it is on a video. Its a peaceful sound that when I turn my head lets me know instinctively what direction it is heading.

Now I do not sail with music but you put some nice soundtrack behind a good sailing video and it can set the mood and be more enjoyable to watch than the static crrrrrssssssssfffffffffshhhhhhhhhh

When I bought Pearl she had a car radio that just sat on on of the setees. The lady that put it in had her for five years without ever sailing her. After a few times out, the speakers died, then the radio shorted out due to salt water. (not a dry boat!) It was nice to have the classical station on for while it lasted. But, now that I don't have tunes, I don't miss them. The sounds from the gaff and rigging and hull are entertainment in themselves.

I have some pretty good "boat music" on right now: Sting's new album of 16th century lute music Songs from the Labyrinth.

I'm in the "only while lounging at anchor, etc" camp, but as I reflect on this, it may have something to do with the fact that my boat is usually 1-3 people max. When I go racing we often have music on after the finish, but that's 6 people which fosters more of a party atmosphere.

Been told. "I can't stand any more of that Jimmy Buffet record". Seems I have to get another CD.

Since Margarita is part way through a major refit the stereo system is still on the to do list. But it would be nice to have music at times.

I agree with Joe about the music in the videos. The sounds a microphone picks up don't really sound like sailing, and you just don't get the mood. The right music can create the mood that the sound of the wind in the sails would have created on board, or otherwise communicate something about the spirit of the day.

Agreed - the music with the videos (albeit the right music) adds something.

Music while sailing is dependent on conditions. James Taylor, Buffet, Mozart all have a time and place.

And you gotta have Dobie Gray on my boat :) (Drift Away) ;)

There's no option for listening to music while your boat is on the hard, undergoing a refit. Blues would be the appropriate genre.:D

All of the wooden boat video sailors, need to seriously pick up 'your' acts. The accompliment to the footage can only be one of four tracks;

'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' by Split Enz

or

'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' by Little Birdy

or

'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists

or the only other option is

'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' by The Winechuggers.

All found on pandora.com

I hope this helps.
