One of my best I have to say ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib1utb03xfw

Still uploading so it may take a bit :) I had to compress it a lot to get it to upload, so a lot of nice detail was lost :( but such is the way things have to be if you want mass exposure ;)

Hey Joe,
do you use a windsock on your video camera mic?

I know they don't stop all the wind noise, but as a lot of people seem to make their own, I am wondering if a 'super windsock' could be made especially for sailing conditions (It would probably cut out a fair bit of other noises too but without the wind it would be a lot nicer).
I seem to have read that you can also do a low pass filter on the sound that will eliminate more of that noise.

I really hate wind static, it seems to somehow overpower and ruin the real feeling of peace and serenity that boating (sailing in particular) is all about.

Nice Vid though.
I do prefer it when the sails are up.

Three cheers for the dodger. I have to make one for my boat, and yours looks very nice.

EDIT- Another option could be to have an external mic that you leave set up inside the cover of the dodger. Just don't trip over the cord.

Hey Joe,
do you use a windsock on your video camera mic?.

Dude it's just a small handheld with an internal mic no sock could cover it. I could edited some of the wind noise out on the Mac in post production. But for this video the wind is kinda funny. :D

I don;t know how involved I'm going to try and get with these, Just going out and having fun.

That was a great troll Joe ;) What a riot you guys are :) That was laugh out loud funny. Wooden boat films Hahaha. With our stars :) Really it was great thanks a lot:) Biggest kick I've ever gottin here on WBF:cool: :D

But doesn't the sail generally have to get hoisted for it to be sailing:confused: Good job either way . Ya see I'll pullin for ya against ole 76 er? :D

Is there not even a hole in the shell for the internal mic?
If so, a peice of foam over the hole could make a lot of difference.

I know it is only for fun, but wind noise has bugged me from the very begining of homemade movies. And as sailing requires wind, the problem seems to be a permanent one for those that like to sail and film.

I don;t know how involved I'm going to try and get with these

such is the way things have to be if you want mass exposure
:D :D :D

I think we will be seing a few more videos yet.

Keep em comin, its a very pretty area. I love those houses on the hills.

Excellent video.

To deal with wind noise I experimented by putting the sleeve of my sweatshirt over the microphone of my camera while shooting a video while sailing with good results for reducing wind noise. I'm going to try taping bits of folded up cloth or gause with a bandaid over the mic.

I like the wind noise and if I ever get one uploaded of us blasting along in 30 -35 knots there will be plenty.
Keep it Joe, its good. I agree with Paul. I was laughing my head off watching that. Still chuckling, I'm showing it to the whole fam damily later.

Don't get me wrong,
its not that I wouldn't want to hear the wind,
its just that I would prefer to hear it more like it actually sounds to the humans sailing the boat.
The wind (static) noise from an exposed mic in 30-35 knots would likely be the only noise available on the footage. In the real life experience, this is obviously not the case.
Crackling wind static tends to give me a head-ache and make me grit my teeth. A personal thing maybe.

I would rather be hearing the wind whistle through the rigging, flapping the sails and the sounds of the boat creaking and water slapping. I LOVE the sound of big winds, especially on the water. The real noise is what I want to hear.

I don't mean to harp on though.

Well then quit harping :D You couldn't hear the sails flapping cuz they didn't putum up , they where motoring as far as I could tell . Jeesh it was funny though , The wife and I are going to watch it again. Great job Joe and co star / solo artist Phil:cool:

Try it again, there is a bit of a delay but it will play.

Big grin here.

The wind noise is a bother. It's not Hollywood, it's reality, I suppose, and wind socks are frequently not a part of reality.

Will watch again.

When the sequel come out?

LOL... well, my video might have Annie Lennox singing Bob Marley, but now yours has Phil singing Annie Lennox singing Bob Marley... too too funny!

I'll have to watch from home tonight... to hard to hide from my co-workers prying eyes. From what I can see, a great job though :-)

I don't mind the wind noise that much, you can always turn down the "gain" in your editing software if you want to. In this video, it really adds to the "drama".

Another thought is that your camera might have a microphone plug for an external mic. That would probably override your internal mic. and if so, you could mount your external mic backwards so that it is not having the wind blowing directly into it. And/or wear a clip-on mic protected by your clothing.

What's with all the criticism? Better to use that energy on your own production. Think I'll look into a cheapy vid cam.

Joe, as an experiment you could try using a bandaid for a windscreen; put the pad over the hole leading to the microphone. I have no idea if this would work, but it won't cost much to try it.

The vid was a good way to start the day here, thanks for the footage Phil and Joe. Great real stuff, it was well worth the look. Cheers.

The pub looks really cool. If there was a pub with that ambience here where we sail, it would send our yacht club broke. I know where the guys would want to hang out.

Keep the videos coming Joe. You and the amazing Paul G are both inspiring me to shoot some boat footage. I'll start shooting, but will need help figuring out how to keep a bit of picture quality in the system, if that is at all possible?

There are a couple of boats here that haven't moved off their moorings at any stage over the last year or two. They are interestingly different. I'll ask the sea gulls would they mind if their boats are photographed. If not, I'm sure that the gulls will dive bomb me ... to let me know.

Warren.
