bad video sorry, I've got the vhs to dvd but getting it to file digitally on the computer is beyond me ATM. maybe later.
Anyway, back in 2000 we returned from the mahurangi regatta in 30 , 35 and gusts to 40 knots and that made for a hairy trip in our type of boat.
As a 1907 counter sterned gaff cutter with the mast fairly forward and a 28 ft long boom, these boats don't balance well when past a reach... the mains are still big even reefed and they always seem to load up something terrible. You'll see Kirsty putting the brake on with the weather helm( although it doesn't seem to slow us much).
So we left Mahurangi on a beam to broad reach and headed down to Tiri passage where we turn the corner to starboard and harden up to a close reach back to town. This is on the broad reach down to Tiri, no vid of later cos it got too wet.

That hull wave is 9 easy and probably a few 10's in there.

What a ride!! Would have been fun on the tiller. How am I supposed to concentrate on the job now?
PS What's your tidal range there John?

She was a fun day and it got fairly dramatic later. In reality you have to consider the boat type and in much more weather than that we probably would stay put. She's old and low freeboard with a big rig.
Thats the day the helicopter buzzed us and took a bunch of primo photos( I've put here before) which are hanging on the wall at home.
2 reefs Joe, staysail and small 100 ft jib for the reach and I took the jib off for the lead home.

Mostly about 2 to 2.5 m Sku. A few lower and higher than that. Generally not a big tidal flow to worry about but that channel in the distance ,Tiri passage , gets a real mean wind against tide action in a breeze. I think we were lucky with the timing that day. We were racing ( passage race on anniversary day) I think we placed actually:confused: can't remember. I seem to recall a third.

Woooohoooooo!
Unless I missed it, (entirely possible, schedule being what it is lately) you realize you're gonna have to pull a Joe and turn the cam around at least once, and say something witty or salty or something.

I spose I could have put a commentary on there. You know how I did it......
See, being technically challenged as I am, and only managing to get so far with the change to digital from the old vhs tape, I just ran it on the laptop and shot it with the digital camera after telling the kids to shut up in the background.:D Thats mostly why its so bad.
I could have run music in the background too come to think of it. Ar har har.
Does anyone know how to change a " VOD" file to an avi or mpeg ..... I cant save the file from the dvd as anything else?

Absolutely fantastic John! There's nuthin' like a well set up gaffer on a reach. What a treat - I'm going to watch that more than a few times.
Sigh. I gotta get back on the water. Next season for sure. - Norm

Can you play the tape in the vcr, connect your digital camera to the vcr output jacks? That should work.
Google is your friend on changing the file formats. :)

Great video John.
I had the pleasure of lunch and a chat with an old-timer doing some wooden boat work with John B a few months back - and yes, he had the camera pointed the right way!!!

Waaal thanks Bigfella, of course we couldn't take any pics of your luminescent phisog now could we, else women all over the world would be a packing their bags and come running to you.:D
Thanks Kim , my camera( don't laugh) is a 3.2mp canon ixus with an accidental short clip video mode on it that I've mostly ignored over the years. So it doesn't have any extra jacks.. It has digital av out and thats it. I tried it after your last post on the subject but no go no matter how loud I screamed.:) Its done very good service but it isn't really a proper digital video cam.
I'll have a look at google though. good idea thanks.
Glad you like it Norm, water gone hard up where you are has it? or soon ?
I was describing Joe's Hudson video to the kids last night and telling em how the river turns to ice( " yeah ,right Dad")no no really....
Paul, I parked next door to a very late model lhd corvette at the boat the other day. " how has he got that complied ?" I thought( You have to convert to rhd or be older than 25yrs lhd to be registered road legal here.) So I went and checked the VIN and he had a vin and plates off a 97 camaro the dog.Presumably he's got a rhd road legal 97 camaro at home LOL and just hopes the law/parking warden doesn't know the difference..

Looks like the old girl tracks very well. The photo from the helicopter was also something to behold.
I envy you.

I'm just wondering what your referring too by '9' and 'a few 10's'?
Great video though, thank you.

Oh she tracks all right in the end ok Mickey, its just the acrobatics on a broad reach or run that brings to mind the weather helm men of yesteryear.:D She might be heavy but you always have steerage and control ultimately.
Brian, welcome to the world of displacement hulls :) . Knots. Each hull has an optimum and a seldom reached max that they tend to run at. We do 7 and 7.5 all the time . 8 a lot and 8.5 quite a bit. 9 +is hard and more is phenomenal. ( unless surfing).
I'm pretty conservative with speed and I like to ratify the log with some gps data/tidal flow but some of those waves say 10 to me.( and thats what the log said that day)

Not congealed yet and hasn't for a year or two - but it's coming for sure this winter methinks. This year October feels like November, and that's cold. It's just that we've been ashore for repairs for two seasons and I miss it. Your video made me drool. - Norm

Thanks John, for the explanation. I'm not unfamiliar with displacement hulls...

...just not familiar with measuring speed by the hull waves. Learn something new here everyday! :)

LOL. I'd forgotten you had that, I was thinking about those grunty looking ali boats you blast around in.
Froudes wave line theory IIRC. You can estimate speed by measuring the distance between the crests of the bow and stern wave generated by a hull. practically speaking, the further back the crest of the stern wave is, the faster you're going.
For any given displacement type hull, you can look at a photo and get a good idea of how it's going relative to its maximum potential too.
pretty classy with the music Martin:)
2 seasons Norm!... ouch.
