Until last weekend we hadnt either!!

Then my wonderous bride her bloody highness the loverly possumpoop Jody had the brilliant idea that she would enter a quilt in the local show

to wit this one...

Then she decided at the last minute to make a miniture quilt to enter so she promptly started cutting and sewing the over 200 small peices and made this...

Meanwhile out in the shed our youngset young Josh had started making a serving tray to give to his mum for Chrissy (under his old mans guidance)... this one in fact...

Then he decided to follow his mums example and made a quilted pillow (under her guidance)

Meanwhile... out in the shed... dad was busy making what initially began life as an intended laptop computer case but ended up as a quilters fat quater case... to wit this one

And had recently complated a gift for my artist sister of a paint brush box... this one in fact!

Meanwhile at the lathe!! I had started turning about 4 months ago between other things and had turned this Plum mug being my first real attempt at turning such as this... which had since being made enjoyed life on the shelf above the lounge

And there was this "painting" I had done of veneers called "home before the storm" some time ago that was sitting on the shelf in the kitchen

Sooooo... what happened?

Well as can be seen...
Joshy won both sections woodworker junior and quilter junior!!
I won and placed second in the woodworker section!
Jo didnt rate a mention with her work :(

It was heartbreaking for her since I was back at the mine so over 3000 miles away and they had folded the quilt and stuck in among a few others no photo no nothing and the only ones on display were those done by members of until this show non existant local quilters "club"... Jody travels 30 klicks up the road to the next town to meet with other quilters as there is no club in Brunswick... till the show apparently... even the other ladies in her group had never heard of the brunswick mob!!... but the only ones to win place or have their quilts shown were members of this "club" any individual quilters had theirs folded and placed on a table.

If they intended on doing this folding caper or had a "lack of room" so couldnt display all the quilts (quite wrong actually there was plenty of room to display EVERY peice by the members of this "club") all they had to do was ask for a photo to display with it at least this would have given Jo the joy of knowin that what she had taken so much effort over making people had been able to see... didnt matter to her that she didnt win shes only been quilting for a few months so she didnt expect to it was for her an opportunity to "show" her work but that didnt happen

Anyway! There you go mates! All up? Joshy is a happy as a wee piggie in a poke with his wins!! and I was initially pretty rapt as well by taking out both first and second places... then well... bit hard to give the missus a hug cuddle or any reasurance when Im 3000 klicks away but now Im back for a few days... NO WUCKIN FURRIES!!! :D

Do it again? I will I think... as for Jo? I think she will once she gets over the attitude and small mindness of thie people who run this town and "show"... she loves her quilting man has she made some bloody quilts over the last few months!!!!!!! EGAD!! quilts to the left of us quilts to the right hell theirs quilts flyin halfway round the flamin world to her family members who live overseas!! so she wont stop she may well hessitate before she submits another one to this towns show but wont at all to submit one to any other show... she loves it!

Quite interesting feeling actually... submitting something for what amounts to critizism without critique just win loose... quite interesting... and then KNOWING all the muckups stuffups goofups coverups that youve made with the peices you submit but then to WIN??? amazing!! :p

I think that quilt is first place material!!!
Don't worry, I am an artist and have been in hundreds of shows.
Sometimes you win and later find out the judge of the show was looking for something and you just happened to have it.
Sometimes I have entered and lost and was later told there was a"THEME" but i was never told in advance what the theme was.
Don't worry about it.

Hi Mate,
Love that quilt. You have some real talent in that family of yours. Would she consider making another quilt like that one and shipping it to the states? Would make a great Chrissy gift for my better half.

Congratulations to all of you on the nice work! I'm sorry Jo's work was so poorly displayed.

As an artist, I've had work in various shows. It helps to develop a thick skin with this sort of thing. I've had work accepted into national shows and turned down by more local shows. The thing to remember is that you still have the work and you can always enter it into other shows if you want to. The fact that someone accepted the work and then displayed it poorly is a reflection on them, not you. In the end, part of putting your work out there for others to see is discovering that no matter how good the work, some people won't like it, and choices you may not like may well get made regarding how the work is displayed.

Nice work Dingo and family. :)

All this talk of thick skin , take it with a grain of salt , etc , is good solid advice. Hard to take / put into practice thats for sure:rolleyes: .

The few shows I've entered stuff in where nervre racking in a personal way, as any builder / artist puts so much of theirself into each piece ,to then take yourself "out" and enjoy / see the big picture , exposure , business end , potental clients, etc , is well nearly impossible ,at least for me .

Now where'd I put that ear??? :D

aahh the ear! tis a terrible afliction this thing called "artistry" rip an ear of here a touch of madness there a flash of brilliance from time to time aahh the ear the dear ear how Ive missed that bloody ear!

Thanks for the comments fellas I will get her to have a read in the morning for encouragement!

As for the things of the family Yaz didnt enter her scrapbooking which is actually quite stunning while Lissa is in Kal and didnt enter her photography or drawings and Tiff also decided against entering any of her photography scrapbooking or woodworking items nor did Jacinta or Brie enter their jewelery and beading work while Bethany decided not to enter her painting drawings or photography all are actually very good.

To some extent they are like me with their work very hessitant to display it for fear of being rejected or hurt by failure to succeed... its a thing I have  Jo on the other hand has always enjoyed "showing" what she does simply because she enjoys learning and taking on board well meaning and founded criticism but this was a shock to her the manner of how they treated the non members of the "club". In the other showings shes done at other shows in rural towns weve lived in the individual entrants got the opportunity to actually show by presentation or photo their works this one didnt and that I think hurt her more than anything else.

But shes tuff and as Ive said before VERY stoic so while it phissed her of something shocking it wont last and she will bounce back and continue.

Charlie I will let her read this thread and she can respond okay?

Again thank you all for your comments and the blue ribbon she will be surprised!!

oooh and shark_ef? Mate!! i suppose you all others had enough praise at the show, so i'll just say nice job on everything else as that brigand Braveheart was meant to say "Gimme mah praise or gimme more praise but by the gawds gi me praise!!! :D :D sorry couldnt resist it :o oh and I didnt get any!! I was at the time quite a long way away :( only praise I got was "oh you know that box and case I entered in the show for you? well you won and came second" that was it!! praise oooh please I need praise!! :D:D:D nah not really Im a FIG JAM type fella ;)

To be honest mate... Ive never been more proud of Jo than when she started doing this quilting caper... shes always done tatting and crotchet along with cross stitch sewing and knitting but never having done quilting before she simply stepped out and started she attended 2 lessons given free by the people she bought her machine from and on the third was asked to teach it as the people themselves thought she was better than they were and still to this day refuse to believe that she had never done it before... she is quite simply bloody brilliant... but then Im biased ;)

With Joshy Im proud as any dad can be of his 12 year old son what a kid he is... not only did he decide to make the tray but he decided that he would enter it not through the school which he could have but by himself... but then to also decide to have a go at quilting and making a pillow for no other reason than to enter that in the show... but to enter them and win both! what a boy he is!!

As to the rest well they are very good at their interests and although they do it for pleasure many are better than some that Ive seen shown and won... they are all great kids that any parent would be proud of but theyre ours and by the living harry Im so proud of them all its truely increadible!

Me? well Im just gobsmacked... shyte I won??????????? BLOODY HELL!! even with all the stuffups muckups etc I still won? AND placed second??? Talk about amaflaminzing!! :p Still they are okay so Im pretty chuffed  seems theres buggar all competition here eh? :D

I would not put much stock in the ribbons and such....
I am member of two artist guilds....never won a ribbon or honorable mention, and quite frankly am not one of the local "Cliques".....
However....it's fun to know that the highest dollar one of the Honorees/winners has been about $350.......and mine have sold for over three times that.....I stopped exhibiting about 5 years ago...so do what you like...put it out for folks to see....and don't worry what small minded people think....

With the talent Jo has, could you sweet talk her in to sewing your nex set of sails?
