Sam Crocker has mentioned to me that the Block Island Marine Fund is interested in Uncas..
I'm looking for the scuttlebut from those who know the organization before I donate Uncas to them...
Although Uncas is basically dead.. I still care what happens or could happen to him...
I don't care about the tax breaks for donating... I care about what happens to the boat....

IIRC, the latest "Save a Classic," a 43 ft Alden schooner, is owned (and for sale) by the Block Island Marine Fund, and it does not appear they've done any work to restore or preserve the boat, FWIW.

Learned a few things re: Scooner that was donated..
Talked to the head honcho...
If the price advertized was 55 grand, it would be sold closer to 35 grand
As it is a nonprofit and the boat was donated, the organization has to maintain the boat on its books for 2 yrs... Hence, 70% down.. the rest.. owned by the nonprofuts. Ya can't buy it outright.
Survey was good but I did not recognize the name.
Boat built 1980....

If you're thinking about donating Uncas, you might consider IYRS in Newport or the Apprenticeshop here in Maine. Both programs teach the craft of wooden boat building/restoration, which certainly seems like a good cause. IYRS = www.iyrs.com and the Apprenticeshop = www.apprenticeshop.com

Doug.. I have chatted via e-mail with the IYRS.. I have sent them pictures.. It has to go through a committee.. umm.. no word...
I have tried them.... If they want Uncas, the ball is in their court.

Gary E.. I am not questioning the work they do..It is good work...no questioin... It is harder to donate a boat than one would expect... That's all I'm saying...
I have done my bit..if they don't want Uncas, I'm sure another organization will jump at him.

To bad there's not a school that will take it and use it as a project.
