I am on my way to Strong Mem. in Rochester again today for more treatment for my neuromuscle problems. I have been told the next step is a stay at the Cleveland Clinic. What is the area like? Not sure if I should have Debbie drive me there or look into flying. Charlie

Cleveland Clinic is hard off 90, northeast of Cleveburg. The airport is on the west side of town, and probably at least an hour from the clinic.

We went to Cleveland last May to visit Gary Bergman and the Royaliste. I had not been there in over 20 years. It was a real surprise. A very vibrant downtown early on a Saturday morning. Got a little turned around finding the marina so we got to see many close in neighborhoods. Everything there seems to be alive, not like a lot of other similar sized cities. I came away pleasantly impressed.

I grew up just outside of Cleveland, in what became a west side suburb, during the time the Cuyahoga River caught fire with some regularity. It was still a pretty gritty town, and the revival in the industrial flats, the plain along the river, from manufacturing to clubs, was a distant dream. I also spent a few years of my adult life on the east side at University Circle. A very yeasty mix of ethnicity when I was there, mostly Jewish and Italian, with the usual students at university thrown in. Haven't been back for years.

As Donn said, the Cleveland Clinic is over on the east side, and the airport way over on the west. It's not a horrible drive, though watch out for "dead man's curve." Anyone who has spent time in Cleveland will know. 71, the main N to S road, funnels into 90 E at a right angle, and it can be hairy, or was when I was there.

Le'see. My favorite parts of Cleveland were, in order: its park system, its art museum, and its orchestra. The Westside Market, University Heights and Little Italy also held many charms.

If you didn't want to brave the city driving, it might be worth considering flying into Erie, PA and driving in from there to the hospital. Cleveland has a pretty good light rail system that runs east to west, if you want to explore. I assume there's also a boat trip still available on the Cuyahoga aboard the Goodtime I or II. The river doesn't catch fire anymore.

Good luck with your ailment, Charlie.

First question. Which campus? Cleveland Clinic has a bunch of campuses, some scattered around the outskirts of Cleveland. Some specialties and outpatient services are at these suburban campuses.
The East Side of Cleveland contains Cleveland's cutural center but there are plenty of ghetto neighborhoods near by so it would be advantageous to have your own wheels to get around. The East Side also harbors CC's Main Campus which is a huge tract of land that was gotten cheaply courtesy of urban renewal. It is like a city in itself. They have their own police force, their own hotels, probably their own eateries ( I've never eaten there) parking garages etc., etc., so you may be able to stay right there for the duration of your consultation.
Cleveland Clinic is such a big operation in Cleveland that there are probably signs to guide you from I-90 to the Main Campus which is on Euclid Ave. and about east 90th street. If you come by way of I-80 and the Turnpike you will need a cheat sheet from Mapquest to guide you up I-77 to the Main Campus.
Cleveland Clinic is such a big time operation I would think that they have an overabundance of services to guide the tons of visitors who come from out of town.

Dragons. I like it. Lots to do in the Theater District, you can walk all over downtown, ballparks, museums. It is a cool place. The Edgewater YC is very fine.

I think that it's called Lakeshore Drive? Take a drive down to Lakeshore Park and check out the lake and the club. Nice people.

What C.Chuck said.
Which campus?
The drive fromn Hopkins airport is quick enough on I-71 into town for the main campus unless it's rush hour.
In winter dress warm. Very warm.
