Greetings,

The Star of India had her 143rd birthday this past Saturday. She sails this coming weekend.

I had made the crew of HMS Surprise which was to sail alongside, but a Coast Guard put a stop to that.

But, I'm on standby to crew Star if there are no shows.

Cheers,
Brad

Ages ago, when I was first starting my life in the "marine industry" I was doing a refinish job on a 90ft. retired Coast and Geodetic Survey vessel. The father of the owner of the neighboring boat was Capt. Adrian Renoud. (sp?). He had served on sailing ship ships in the early part of the 20th century.

He was the skipper of the C.A. Thayer when she went to San Francisco from Seattle in the 50s. When it came time to sail the Star of India, he was chosen to command her. He told a great story of the ship hoisting sail and great cheers coming from a multitude which covered the waterfront.

To me, the "tall ship" (god, I hate that term) fans are almost invariably terrible gasbags. Capt. Renoud was the real thing. He told great stories....literature quality really...it was a hard tough life on these ships.

Captain Raynaud was quite an inspiration and our annual Pacific Northwest week of schooner racing is named after him. If you would like to check out the website of the Captain Raynaud International Schooner Race and a picture of the good Captain, go to:http://www.crisr.org/index.htm

BTW, I did not put this up because of this year's winner (ahem) but in honor of all who teach the next generation a respect for the sea.

End of soapbox and I'm gone,
