I have read about people fairing boats with "fart blocks"....some kind of compressed glass fibers. I guess they give off a distinctive smell when used, hence the name.

Also, any experience with 3M 216U Gold paper?

The material is actually a foamed glass product. The blocks are widely available from restaurant supply houses for cleaning grills and griddles. Search for "griddle cleaning brick".

I used it years ago in full sheets to completely sound insulate the engine room on a commercial fishing boat. Smells nasty. I cut it with an old hand saw. It is so sharp and abrasive that by the end of the job there were literally no teeth left on the saw, just a smooth edge in the toward the middle of the blade. Hadn't though of the stuff as a fairing block, must work great
