Kevin,
How much, what size, and when will you use it?
Jim Thompson at Thompson's Sawmill is a terrific guy (and it's a terrific place) to work with. They're conveniently located in Richmond, but it'll be fresh cut stuff.
Duke at New England Naval Timbers in CT is another great guy, but with deservedly dearer pricing.
There are a few folks with portable saw mills around as well... again, if fresh cut is OK.
What are you building?

Too funny, I'm in Charlestown as I write this. Anyway I have dealt with thompson quite a bit. Mostly for barn stock. The last time I was there (last spring), they only had red oak. I'm using it for laminating new ribs. Size? about 2" X whatever I rip it. Length will range from 10 to about five. I know stock does change, probably should call them.

Go too www.woodmizer.com and call them and they will give you a list of band saw mill owners in your area, a lot of them are very accomodating to cutting custom orders. I have had great luck dealing with them.

Too funny is right!! I'm on Burdickville Rd... (small pinky schooner backbone in the plastic boat house).
There is a WoodMizer guy in Wickford who seems to keep some boat stock around. I might still have contact info if you want -- give me a shout.

Thompson's has had white oak in the past that was suitable for steam bent framing stock, so if Stephen can't help you for some reason it is certainly worth giving Thompson's a call.

From Ed in Montvale, VA. Have you tried a local veneer company and ask to buy their "backer boards"? I recently bought 4000lbs of cherry & white oak cheap. It's thin, some times varies in thickness. You will need to stick it to dry and thickness plane it to about 1/4" or a little more, however being the center of the tree it is basically 1/4 sawn wood and lends itself to multipl lamination framing and other structure pieces. The boards come about 16" wide, 3/8" or less thick, 10 - 14' long and cost me a few dollars each. Fore more info you can reach me at writeed@localnet.com
