My sister has acquired a 22ft carvel fishing boat that once had a steam engine and short keel to hold the shaft and screw. It now has no keel or rudder, an outboard and a rotting cabin soon to be removed. No pics available as sis's in dock herself at present - something about scraping off the barnacles and red-lead she says!
Hull is sound and watertight, never a sailer we think. Any thoughts about restoring the keel and how to approach the problem. Can she attatch a new keel to the remains of the old if sound? will there be too much strain on the old timber?
Advice please

I'd have thought a good long scarph into the remaining keel, some bolts through, should be good. is there a nice big knee inside from the keel to the transom?

Hi Phil, The remains of the keel plank have worn or been planed level with the bottom planks and not too level at that. There's not too much timber left. The remains of the existing scarph to the stem is not very long and I worry that there's not much of it left to bolt on to. The keel plank as remains is not far off square I think and the garboard joint is almost exposed in places. I worry that leverage may pull the boat apart. Can't remember about the transom knee but it's almost vertical. The boats at Goolwa and when Jen is up and about again I'll get her to post a photo or two.
