I'm not sure exactly what counts as paint grade, but a ceramics supply store should have reasonably high grade talc. I found this place recently when someone else here was looking for whiting:

I just figured out that Standard Ceramic has a distrubutor in Braintree that carries raw materials:

Portland Pottery
87 Messina Drive
Braintree, MA 02184

P.S. Don't be fooled by the website. Their main store is in Portland, Maine, but they also have a store in Braintree.

This is the other thread. I also listed some mail order sources on that thread in case you prefer that route.

For what it is worth, I did a little checking and Talc Nytal is the more commonly available form of talc. Portland Pottery has it and sells it for $4.30 for a 5# bag. You can also get 1/4# bags, but if you need a pound it is cheaper to get 5 pounds than it is to get four 1/4# bags.

The purer form of talc is Talc steatite. I do not know of any source for talc steatite.
