This is a model I built and sold last year.
It was 5 feet long and took about one year to build.
Basswood and brass.Hand made from scratch.
I used vernier calipers for everything on the model.
The only way this model could have been better is to have moved to Hawaii and visit the real ship armed with a tape measure every day.

Very nice model Donald, absolutely beautiful.

Reminds me of the museum quality models I saw in the D-day museums when I was in Europe a couple of years ago.

Beats the hell out of watching Tv, doesn't it.

A business ! ha ha ha ha ha ha
You would starve to death. No one will pay you for the time.
One time I had some models at this pond in Sacramento Ca., and the kids said where did you get these models and i told them I built them.
They said, "You can't build those"

Please don't take offense to no posts in the other 2, all are beautiful. Some of us - me- is trying to do less typing and more boat work.;)

Right on. I would be working on my 19 ft. sailboat if I had more moey for materials.
I just thought I would post some pics since someone said it was so dead on the forum lately.

The Wapama and the Racoon models were 1/2 inch equals one foot scale.

The USS Missouri is 1/16 inch equals one foot. Very difficult.

I think I know what calipers are, but what are vernier calipers and what makes them so special?

Calipers measure in thousandths of an inch. Each full turn of the dial
is a.100 thousandths. A human hair is about .001 thousandths.
a piece of copy machine paper is about .006 thousandths of an inch.
They can measure Outside diameters,Inside diameters, and depth of a hole.
Machinists keep these handy all the time.
They also make digital versions. The also make calipers in different sizes but the 6 inch is the most usefull.

On a cold wet winter morning I dragged my wife, my 6 yo son and our newborn son out of the warm house so we may have a chance to board the might Mo while it was still in Bremerton. And we did - whereupon my son promtly figured that the plaque marking the spot where the Japanese surrender took place was a fine place to stand. We didn't stay long after that.

But standing on that ship with the wind blowing and the hard rain being driven under the umbrellas, it wasn't hard for the romance that is a battleship to well-up strong and for pride to well-up even stronger.

It was one of those moments. Thanks for letting me bring a bit of it back.

Yes i can understand. The more I learned about the ship and studied many photos You start to understand what an institution the ship was. The faces of the turrets were 17 inches thick solid steel. I mean they actually contemplated duking it out at close range. Even the armour plates in the sides of the hull were taken to a firing range and blasted at close range to make sure they could take the beating before being installed in the hull.
But all of the citizens of all the countries were going broke trying to pay for the next biggest ship. But it all ended when one missle fired from a long way off could take out any battleship. Now subs with missles are king. The new subs are built with 4 inch thick all titanium hulls. No corrosion. And the only thing that will be able to take those out will be missles directed from space. Will we blow up our own planet and have no reason to return. Hope not.
