Dryden man designs, builds boat from scratch

Justin Armstrong has built a traditional design 30-foot wooden sail boat in a large garage on his parent's property in the Town of Dryden. He is hoping to launch the vessel after Christmas and be rigged and ready to sail by the summer of 2007.

The deck of Justin Armstrong's vessel is surrounded by a bulwark about 1 foot tall.

Armstrong made scale models of different hull shapes, right, before settling on his final design of a traditional cutter.

The bowsprit of the Penny Rover and other parts of the vessel are too tall to fit through the front door of the large garage where Justin Armstrong built it, so some parts of the front wall will have to be removed when the vessel is taken to be launched.

Justin Armstrong talks about the durability of the Black Locust wood used for the frame of his vessel. He noted that the locust has similar properties to oak and makes the structure very strong.

Armstrong has machined many of the metal fittings for his boat. This detail shows where the bulwark meets the deck next to the cabin roof.

I was on my way to work, and I saw her on a trailer going West. Probably headed up the west shore of Cayuga Lake.
I read the article in the Ithaca Journal last week, so I was pretty excited about seeing her this morning.
She's really pretty, and with quite a wide beam.
I hope the launch went well today!

Dryden....Black Locust....Ithaca Journal - New York?
What continent is he/this in?
BEAUTIFUL boat. Reminding me of Lyle Hess' designs. I have major lust problems after those boats. Small, efficient, take you any where in the world you want to go boats. Love em.

I think the original intention was for her to sail on Seneca Lake, but I think I saw her moored at East Shore Marina on Cayuga (my Lake) this summer.
Didn't really get a good look though. Can't say for sure

Dryden man designs, builds boat from scratch Journal Staff DRYDEN - In his home-based shop on Turkey Hill Road, Justin Armstrong unrolls a sheet of paper covered with numbers and faint, curving pencil lines outlining the cross-sections of a boat. In his hand, he clenches a small wooden model of the 30-foot Penny Rover, the materialization of which looms behind him and nearly fills the expanse of the barn. At just 24, Justin has already designed and built his future home - from scratch.
