I've mentioned this before, but they now are "delivering" the first issue. Interesting concept; check it out here. I believe it's free to get a subscription. Articles this month on Van Dam, a spread on Newport and IYRS, wooden boatbuilding in Brookly:eek: and so on.
It's not going to replace WB, but it's an interesting quick read.

I signed up and tried their first issue. Downloading a PDF would be a lot easier and I would actually own a copy. Their interface sucks.

thanks Lew - interesting idea. I agree the interface could use a little help - or maybe I missed how to scroll left/right when zoomed in??

I like the effort though (and the price!). I'll spend a little time there.

Again those of us in the wilderness will never know how good it can be. Connected at a blazing 26K this morning. Any PDF bigger than a postage stamp takes way too long for me to download. On the other hand there were 10 deer under the bird feeder at dark last night so it isn't all bad here.

To be perfectly honest.... No depth, no real coverage of any one thing, and not really a wood magazine, just a "WannaBe", what is so Classic about a fiberglass(sportfish) Hatteras? or the 31'Bertram they show? Mostly junk as far as I am concerned, high gloss is no substitute for real quality. Sorry but does not cut the mustard! stephen

I agree the first issue has a lot of fluff, but I'd give them a chance. However, I'd disagree that the old glass boats don't merit some sort of coverage, and you won't find a more dedicated wooden boat person than I am.
I don't think this is intended to be a WB replacement, but that Bertram they are covering is now an almost 40 year old design. Jim Backus, in addition to designing the Victory Tugs they do cover, also did a short run design of a boat called "The Gatsby" that, at a very modest distance, really does look like a twenties design and the Victories are now getting on 25 years old. The available pool of classic boats only shrinks, so you have to pay attention to new designs. My quibble is when those new designs only pay lip service to the old ones.
I say give them a chance to see how it develops and what they do with it, but I can see your point and do hope they flesh it out going forward.

Lew , not to be at odds with you... I ,too , am a fan of classic boats, wood or fiberglass, but some are not meant to be classics, and rightly so. Like the various egg harbors or later CC's, that were moving away from pure wood to Plywood to FG.
There are some designs , like the various UK boats i have seen, should never have been built. They look more like trailers than sea going vessels. We also have these same types of boats here. But The whole definition of "Classic" , or antique or what have you, is in the eye of the beholder in some instances. Ill try to post a pic of a newer FG boat, that I think is the epitamy(sp) of horrible......ugly, and a disgrace to look at, but the owner probably has a 8x10 glossy in his office, and thinks it is the Most beautiful thing in the world!
Each to his own....but there are limits too. here is an example of what should never become a classic, let alone have been built but....http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=2097660064

No worries, we're eye to eye on this. Your example of ugly matches my concept to a Tee.
Regarding this magazine, I'd like to see them bring the concept together and even provide some utility going forward. It works for me if all they put up pictures of really pretty boats and talk about them without dumbing it down too much, more than that would be very welcomed.
Don't worry, I'm not running off to promote Victory Tugs.
Merry Christmas!

I see the spring issue is out. The story about Olympus is a good one. And it's still free. classicyachtmag.com

Olympus is one pampered yacht. I was aboard her last year at Victoria and her Captain said: "Oh, you own Rita! Nice little boat." It's all relative.

Lew,

Where can we see photos of Rita? She looks pretty in the tiny avatar you have.

Thanks GCB!
I've put bunches up from time to time, but as luck might have it, I couldn't find most of them on the forum. Here's one that popped up, and I'll get some more on from home tonight.

Lew,

Wow...she's beautiful. The stove and the furnace look original; have they been restored? How long have you owned the boat?

We've had her for almost 14 years. She's a 1938 Monk design.

The stove and furnace are original. The stove was restored professionally in our first year of ownership, I only had to paint the furnace as it was in good shape. We discovered it's original color (it was Ford blue when we got the boat) while walking through the Smithsonian, where they have one in a display of 20th Century industrial design objects. It's the only other one of it's type I've ever seen, though I've seen other copies of the cook stove over the years.

Here's a link to an album of exteriors (and other errata)

Mr. Barrett,

My wife and I are planning a trip to Victoria over Labor Day weekend. Any chance Rita will be involved in the festivities there?

GCB,

You bet she will be, and you are welcome to all of our hospitality and the run of the ship. No doubt there will be a slew of forumites at the event. Deb and Dave always make it, so does Rob and many others. Paul Gartside is listed as a judge from time to time. Todd gets over as does Ted Brewer, though they all missed it last year. Then there's everyone else to meet.
I'd say we should plan an event on board as we get closer to the weekend, though all are welcome to stop by at any time. I'm in no particular hurry to get there, though. I love the event but it signals the end of the season. It's always a terrific time though.

Lew,

I was lurking on the CYA site today (jokes, anyone?) and saw that you're a grand poohbah of sorts over there. Do you guys have summer meets (before the Labor Day event)?
