is there any info on actually melting aluminum anywhere? i've done lead but not alum.

This is interesting; it had crossed my mind to shape GS' keel out of foam, bury it in concrete (with appropriate vent holes) and and pour in hot lead...

aluminum is easy to melt... Its bronze that is a pain!!!!!
