I have been paging through some pics from previous WB calendars and came across a small boat rigged with a balanced lug and jib. I am curious as to how well this arrangement works. If anyone has ever used such a rig, please chime about its pros and cons. Thanks.

The leach of the jib tends to foul on the forward (lower) end of the yard. The best solution I came to was to make a bowsprit, and attach the tack of the jib to it. This brought the jib's leach far enough forward to clear the main when tacking. I wanted more sail for light conditions, I thought.
I decided the fuss was not worth it, and went back to a (large) balanced lug on its own with oars for when the wind dropped.

Mine was designed for it, and I love it. That little scrap of cloth pulls surprisingly for its size. I added a jibboom to shunt the whole sail forward a tad which has eliminated the occasional fouling problem with the yard end.
PS converting to standing lug helped too, both with performance and the fouling yard tendency.
