I read with interest this thread (speaking of living aboard) and start this new one !
I have always be a big fan of Daniel Z. Bombigher' s designs, specially the "Spountz", my original intention was to built one but I end up rebuilding an old one : www.mavourneen-mary.com (http://www.mavourneen-mary.com)
Anyway here is a website for Bombigher designs (he died not long ago) :

Have a look and your comments will be appreciated !

I took some pictures of one in Sint Maarten a year or so ago. I like Bombighers artwork, but I didn't like the real thing.

I remember that deadeye thread, weird huh?

I've never seen his boats in person, but I do like how rakish he draws the rigs for his schooners.

no no no... not fake deadeyes... just a slick way of tensioning them. They just hadn't put on the lashings yet nor removed the turnbuckles after the lashings were in place ;-)

Iannig,
I have always liked Daniel's designs and I had a long email correspondance with him shortly before he died-he was a very interesting guy-very knowledgeable and very opinionated. Alas, I have never had the opportunity to sail one of his boats but I eagerly await the day I can-from my understanding, most of his designs (the Shpountz being the most common) were amateur built-some built very well and to plans and some not-Danile was not too fond of people modifying his boats-so I guess there are "good ones" and not-so-good ones. If the boats are half as good as Daniel claimed-and obviously they are aimed at a very specific target-then they should really be special. I have been in touch with owners of the boats that confirm pretty much Daniel claims-speed, handling, sea-keeping, ease of maintenance etc, so I think they are "real" so to speak-although clearly not to everyone's tastes...

Same for me, never sail on one of them !
Most have been built by amateurs ,a few by yards like CNN .
I still have a "hors series : Loisirs Nautiques" double volume on the construction of the 44' Spountz, (in french !!) where every single details of construction is explained ,even how to built the captain chair !!
Very interesting !
You right also on the fact that these designs are not everybody cup of tea
It's a bit an attempt of designing new boats like old ones !
Prefer the real Mcoy myself , but this said they still look very nice

What's w/ the fake deadeyes? What were they thinking?
