View Full Version : Glass cross-lams in dainty knees?

I'm laminating some dainty knees for a dinghy. Maybe 6 x 1/8" ash, 3/4" wide.
They'll be screwed in place. I'm concerned about cross-grain strength under
the oval-head screws. Any reason not to include a lam or two of glass cloth
(or uni) near the ends ? Any other ideas?
If the pieces have a bunch of cross grain, I wouldn't think you be able to bend them without snapping. If they do take the bend then I doubt that any cross grain you would have would be an issue for your screws. Glue 'em up and go for it!

If you're worried about the ends splitting when you screw them down then you could include one or two layers of wood in the laminate where the grain is running cross-wise (like plywood). Even one layer like that would greatly increase the resistance to splitting at the ends. I'd be inclinded to do this before I put 'glass cloth into the laminate both because I think it would be more effective and because I think there would be less potential for problems during the glue-up.
