Finally, a little bit of free time (though not much). I'm going to take the opportunity next week to make a run up to the Peabody Essex Museum, and I've made an appointment with the curator to look at and possibly get copies of some of Mr. Crowninshield's designs.
The only issue at this point is that the collection is indexed on paper cards, by design number. This makes simple searching very difficult.
So, does anyone off hand know the design number for Fame? How about Heron?
Even better... scuttlebutt has it that he designed a few smaller (32 to 38 foot) racing schooners... anyone have any idea on design numbers for those, or at least the year they were designed? I don't think they are going to let me just flip through the card catalog, so the more specific I can be, the better.

Heron and a 40 foot schooner were written up in the January and February 1912 issues of Rudder Magazine. PEM may have those and looking there may give you info on the design numbers.
Enjoy and let us know what you find!
I have the FAME drawings so I can check the #. I have been in your position and it is a problem. You can hope that they will be more generous than they make it sound.

I visited the museum back in the 70's and simply asked for Crowninshield "Pup" class and almost immediately got copies made. That happened to be #414. But there was no indication of the name on the drawings. Maybe they just grabbed something but the drawings looked just like my Dad's boat. But then they also look like the "Dark Harbor 17"

I can't help with a design number, but I do know that the 40' racing schooner mentioned above is also featured in 'Designs to Inspire' and is staring at me right now. It might be that the authors could help with the numbers if that is a design you're looking into...

I kinda went through this too, there's more than one design from Crowninshield with the name Fame, and their both schooners.

did you try to talk to these folks at Mystic Seaport? As they have all the old Rudder issues, showing which designs by Crowninshield they profiled, would it not reflect the plan #s? It would at least give you the plan #s that apply to some plans. A starting point.

Shane,
Thanks... exactly what I need.
I have both "Designs to Inspire" and copies of The Rudder articles. Neither has design numbers.
But Shane will get me started!
