I am looking for a picture that I can possibly use as part of a set of plans for a friend. I would like a picture of a spaced gunnel. One in which you can clearly see the spacers and the inside rail. If anyone has one which they would like to share they get credit for the picture in the plans and a set of the plans as a thank you.

Steve

PS: I am not selling anything tho the plans MAY end up in a book of simple designs that can be built relatively quickly (eventually). This is for a 14ft flat bottomed skiff designed for a friend as a duck hunting platform. I hope to take pictures of the build this spring. I will probably use pictures of the actual construction but may include yours if it is particularly striking.

Spaced with what? I used a combination of small framelets to stiffen the sides, seat knees and a few small blocks in empty places to space the inwales on this one. On little boats and canoes without such things, small blocks or routered scuppers are pretty common, though I don't have a decent photo of one handy. Somebody will for sure.

Here's a bit of the plans for a 16' Hankins Sea Bright Skiff, showing the use of frame ends as spacers between inwales and outwales.

Here's what it looks like in person, on an 18 footer:

I am sure you can... That why I posted it..... Need any spec..on how it is done?:)

There isn't a secret in making slotted gunnels...

Thank you...I would need permission from the original plans originators to copy those though.

No...just wanted to illustrate the method, tho I haven't done it myself. I would think it is lots of glue and lots of clamps or perhaps screws from the outside in then clamping the outer wale on.

Steve, I believe that plan is scanned from the book The Sea Bright Skiff and Other Shore Boats by Peter J. Guthorn.

I use screws and clamps... A lots of clamps... I made the clamps from 4" ABS pipe... Cut the pipe 1" inch wide and cut through one side, spread it over the piece to hold till glue cure.... Screws just draw it up tighter... You can either leave the screws in or take them, then fill it in with filler of your choice....
It's not a trade secret....

I know it isn't a trade secret but with folks out there rather touchy about property rights, I would rather get a picture with someone's explicit permission than poach and find myself boiled in my own brine later. I don't have a picture of my own that I can post or I would...but I would like something that I can use as an illustration. I appreciate the picture...it is perfect....thanks.

Splice blocked it... It doubled the thickness in the area... I gonna try scarfing next time...

Sad thing is, that dory turned out very good, and beautiful paint job, but the pictures that I took of it got lost in the old hard drive...
I mean it is the sweetest boat that I have offered in my website...
Just as soon as I say "look ma, I build a dory!" It was sold.....

Thank you fer yer kind comment.:) ..

Here's a shot with paint and varnish - my Whisp (taken right after the rig was set up for the first time -- I certainly hope there aren't any tape whippings left!)

Wow...all of these are awesome pictures of beautiful boats. My own efforts definately pale by comparison. I love building but I hate finishing...which is half or more of the boat. Witness my current effort which sits in the garage with the insides taped and the outsides ready to be. Last time I did any real work on it was 6 months ago and it has been under construction for almost 2 years. These pictures are great tho and I hope folks keep posting em...just so I can look at the boats.

Ocean Spray:

I like the style and look of your boat. What is the design, length, etc.?

It is a 15'00" Ducktrap Wherry designed by Walter Simmons. It was designed for either rowing or sailing. I use mine for rowing only. Built using okoume plywood and epoxy, weigh in at 120lbs. Took about 250 hours scattered over two winters. Two rowing stations, although I usually row by myself. Plans, book and CD with excellant photos available from DucktrapWoodworking.com
Walter may be lurking as I type!

Well, as I am near to compiling the whole shebang I used a couple of pictures that were posted here. I was going to reserve the plans for a book but seeing as it is a DuckSkiff...and I have a great admiration for Duckworks Magazine...I decided that I would put it up there as an exclusive download...you can only get it from there. This is painless as the plans are free. If Oceanspray and Boylesboats would please email me I will send them their sets...everyone else gets to go to Duckworks. I will be sending them the plans in about a week but I don't know how long it will be before they are posted there.
