I have a release here about a company that is promoting lanolin as a marine lubricant.

I never thought of using it on winches. Seems like they would end up smelling like, well, uh.....

I think CRC's SP400 is a lanolin based aerosol and it is great for putting on anything you don't want to rust. Way to tacky for winches though sure to mess up the palls.

Anhydrous lanolin is finastkind for protecting turnbuckle threads, winch innards, ets.

Whereas the raw grease off the sheep's back is "as much use as nae use" - and it gets everywhere.

For what it’s worth, you can buy jars of pure anhydrous lanoline in any drug or medical supply store. It’s used to relieve bed sores, of all things, in elderly patients. Not sure how prices match with marine suppliers, but it’s not that costly. Most commonly applied to threads on turnbuckles and such to prevent seizing. It’s not a particularly good lubricant. Too sticky, especially in cold temperatures. Stores well in a fridge.

Product called lanocote has been used for all of that kind of thing for many decades ... longer?
and of course , after applying it, your hands feel smooth and wrinkle free, and your boat shoes( where you just wiped em to get the excess off ) look suspiciously like new.

Do they swim... no idea, but they do have a nice overcoat for winter and rain.

It's also been sold as a baldness cure, under the slogan "Have you ever seen a bald sheep?".

Trust me, sheep swim. In NZ, I used to help with the sheep dipping that protected them from pests. My job was to push them under and they all came up. IT WAS 1953!

I don't know... Well let load one up in the boat, go out in the middle of the lake, and push the sheep off in the water...:D

I was going to mention this old yarn from Walter Simmons of Duck Trap when I saw Dale mention it:

Our boats are centerboarders. The original boats used rock ballast, and the last of the Salmon fishermen in town allowed as how some ingenious souls used sheep as moveable ballast when they sailed over to the islands. Why? Sheep are afraid of the water, so when the boat heels under sail they climb to windward...just where ballast is wanted. We can't verify that because there are no photos and no one left to ask, but you'll have to agree that it makes a good yarn.

When in Finland a few years back I was told that the natural antipathy of sheep towards water makes them an effective dynamic ballast in boats like this.

And it's not even Friday...

And yes they swim at least my Katahdins do. I'd post a pic but I am stuck on dial-up for a few more days.

Cats don't like water, either. I guess you could use them as moveable ballast, too. Think I'll try it.
