An old friend, Tom Dabney, won the second race at the Star Master's Championships in Miami last weekend, sailing with another friend, Bill Culberson, as crew (it is Bills' very nice boat that they used).
Wanted to give props to Tom. He has been a sailmaker here in Mobile for 30 years, and a long, long time ago he gave me a job as an apprentice sailmaker when I really needed a job. I didn't last long (my wife and I really, really needed to eat), but I enjoyed the short time that I worked for Tom as much as anything I have ever done, even if it was pretty frustrating for a no-talent guy like me. I don't think that I have ever told him that.
One of the ladies who worked with us as a seamstress told me one time that Ted Hood himself considered Tom to be one of the brightest young sailmakers he had ever worked with. I have had friends tell me that he could have worked anywhere and done anything, but he wanted to be at home (he's from Mobile) and do his own thing. We hardly ever talk or see one another any more, but I consider him my friend and wanted to congratulate him. He has always been a very good sailor, and probably sails less than just about anyone you ever met who would have the nerve to get involved in something like a major Star regatta (and Jud Smith finished just in front of Tommy in the Masters. EVERYONE knows who Jud is).
Thanks.
