well, i dont want any special favours as such nor do i wish to start a mutiny or a rampage...but yes, its something i just want to keep (my sign up date and number #113) on the basis that it demonstrates that i have been on here for sometime now...and that it has been me all along who has been the wooden boatie in the family...
do you think this is fair or im asking the technically impossible, or will scot not allow this?

without sounding critical i will say that building the two yachts, PEQUOT then DECATUR were my dreams. as was the idea of going cruising. david was and is not a sailing man. he was capable of many things along the way but his heart is not in it.

i am only just now beginning to slowly start finding the same vigour i used to have with boats. and finding my way back towards the sea again. i guess separating has taken a huge toll on me personally and with so many disapointments along the way, i have shied away from boats in general. so i am looking forward to the boat festival in tasmania.

just to dispell any male notions...DECATUR is entirely in my ownership. so thoughts of buying half and getting the girl at the same time fall flat with me. my situation is unique i am fully aware of. a woman with her own vessel. but just remember this fellas: a vessel can only have one master!

This could have been written by me... XW was NOT a water person. And it's funny how often I have to tell people that it's HARD WORK sailing and cruising... Not all pretty anchorages and a drink in hand. More like upside down in the lazarette feeling sick, sweating and cussing whatever is broke!

You'll be okay!

WOW!!! scot is a dream...he has done the change for me ALREADY...!!! i had heard through the forum grapevine that scot is a good man, but he's 'superman' in my books now! seriously, i wish to thank him for attending to my request. i hadnt done it earlier because i was too shy to ask!
so now i am on my own on the water and sailing my own course. stay tuned folks, i can feel a fresh breeze starting to fill in across the river!!! all i need now is to get a-building and get a new sailor mate! of BOTH of these i am serious about. i do not enjoy being single and do miss companionship.
and i already miss the fun and adventure my new little ship will surely give me...
crickeys! im almost jumping out of my skin here!
dad and i have been in telephone consultation pouring over the "susan's" plans discussing much about her. so we are ready to start as soon as i sell DECATUR. she has had a very good level of interest sown as per the brokers statistics so i am ever hopeful just yet! dad is 75 this year. he says this will be his last boat...ive heard that story twice before already!!!i will be moving back up north to work full time on the yacht so now this time it will be a distinguished older man (boatbuilder) and a much younger woman (offsider/lackey) doing the work. just the two of us with the boat yard cats vasco and bosun for some sort of moral support!!!
im already so excited. this will be...my very own boat...in the real sense...i wonder about that circumnavigation i had wanted to accomplish so many years ago....????

May that fresh breeze be sweet to you and take you far away into your dreams, Bernadette! (sorry for what I feel is not a very good English:o )

Actually, although it might be quite a job finding a mate up to your stature, there must be a lot of quite respectable male singles around you, I am sure:) !

Did I say that a pretty woman was a *casus belli*...;) ???

OK...kind of related....trying to find details on the Susan design. I went back to the "Building a Susan" threads, and it tried to refer me to a first thread with design info, but the connection didn't work.

SO, ANYONE - designer? length? etc?, or a site I can go to? Thanks.

Murray Peterson, 30'=9m. Rod's thread is on a strip/cold molded building but the plans are for traditional plank on frame. Bill Peterson's office # in Maine is 207-644-8100. KATY of recent build (http://www.woodenboat-digital.com/woodenboat/200506/?pg=73) is the Susan hull with a cutter rig. I'd like the schooner but the cutter does have more cabin space.

Thanks, Thad. That's helpful.

Thinking of singlehanding....I've always been drawn to the BCC's, and believe the Pardy's philosophy of going small and simple is sound. Susan looks like it would fit the bill...not sure about the rig in those pictures, though.

Mark,
my father built the Blue Moon up to a partially completed fit out stage. If you have any questions building to the design I would be happy to pass them on. My father is a 'retired' boatbuilder.

Could you ask your dad what construction method he used?
Where did he build her etc.

Hey Bernadette. What a world where a website adminstrators name change seems like your ticket to a new life! I kind of like it. Anyway, you probably don't need my advice, and it seems like you enjoy building boats, so I guess you might as well build another. But....A properly set up biggish boat is probably going to be just as easy, or moreso, to singlehand/shorthand as a smaller boat. You need to think about sail handling systems, but it'll surely be less work and expense than starting afresh with a new boat. My only qualification to make this claim is that I used to have a 52' boat that was nicely set up to singlehand. I sailed mostly with my wife and small kids, which pretty much amounts to single handing cos she was busy keeping the kids safe rather than boat handling. What made it easy was a few things. All sail handling lines led to the cockpit, including reefing. Good autopilot. Roller furling headsails. Lazyjacks. Full battened main. And perhaps most of all, 2 big electric winches, within easy reach of the helm, which was where all those lines ended up. That boat was far easier to sail, (and reef and generally manage) in all wind conditions, than a 23 foot gaffer with no winches and pretty basic, traditional sail handling systems I've also sailed on a lot. OK, there may be a host of reasons why you want to start afresh, just in another thread you basically said it was about Decatur being to big. Be clear with yourself about what's motivating you. You may find a Susan is still a handfull to singlehand unless you get the sail handling details right. Best wishes anyway.

thanks to all or your kind and fun words!!!

i see no problem in making it known that i am single again.
my/our relationship hit hard ground about two years back but we dicided to try and bail ourselves out becuase we had been married such a long time and really neither of us were traditionally angry with the other.
still we dont love each other and we have gone on to pursue own own dreams and desires.
so im not fresh out of one relationship as such as mentioned above by a member.

and heck! i know what i want in life. just now im so darn lucky to have another shot at it starting afresh!!!

the blue moon dad built was carvel construction. he had started it prior to our building DECATUR and sold her off to make room in the shed.

i am aware of modifications i can make to DECATUR to make her much easier to sail/handle. but there is no denying that with or without 'easy handle' systems set up (of which i have thought over quite thoroughly) she remains a big fast boat with bigh gear on board.
of course if i had the revenue to fund her continued improvements and development i might consider keeping her. but first off money dont grow on trees and whats the point in sailing about on a big yacht by myslef when i can have (probably) more fun in the 28'Susan design? and having an agreeable crew mate onboard DECATUR is an issue too.
there is so much more cruising ground open for a boat with 4' or so draft as opposed to 6'. the sail area in the main(cutter rig) will be a sinch to handle. i am actively going to build in a whole lot to make her girl friendly...and i also have to be mindful of the fact that i have a bung shoulder to care for! all 'systems' will be easy to handle and simple to rectify should a problem arise. she will be a sweet sailer and if i happen to be out in foul weather, i bet i wont feel any worse than say the new owners of the schooner DECATUR should they too, be out at the same time!!!

all aside, my father is keen to build the new yacht and so am i. i have always liked smaller yachts. PEQUOT my 32' gaff cutter was and still is a special girl in my heart! the building of the new boat is a lifeline for my father. he thrives on building. so how nice is it to keep him happy with yet anther building project, if not just for that reason alone. i have plenty of time for sailing.

i dont understand the comments made by "katherine" perhaps someone would care to elaborate?

I'm in much the same situation with the Owens, but I am not opposed to having a willing first mate. It's no big secret a POI of mine is also a forumite. Unfortunately he's in cruising sailboats and not large power boats. While I'm very much for sail boat cruising, we'll have to work something out for the Owens. On the upside, the Owens is a pretty forgiving vessel to learn your wooden boat skills on.

Besides, it will give us something to play with while he chooses a sail boat design.
