Hi. I'm trying to learn more about how the big schooners (commercial and private) built between 1850 and 1900 were designed and built, and what, if any classification standards were used. So if anyone knows of any good references (I assume most are out of print) I would be much appreciative. Thanks!

Adam -

You may be able to find an old copy of "The Elements of Wood Ship Construction" on one of the used book sites such as Abebooks. The author is W.H. Curtis, and the publisher is McGraw Hill. My edition was published in 1919. It has a lot of construction techniques for double-sawn frame vessels, but nothing about design.

Abe's has it - well, kind of. There's a re-printer who'll sell you a copy for $93.00. I've never seen this book, so I have no idea if it's worth it.

Brad Story's book, The Building of Blackfish, is a great pictorial record of building a 50'+ schooner the old way in his dad's yard in the 1930's. Doublesawn frames and fully ceiled construction. A small schooner, but built like a big one. GREAT book. I have a copy; you can't have it. Try bookfinder.com. They search all the online booksellers, inclubing abebooks and alibris and amazon and a zillion others.

P.S. Blackfish came to a bad end about 25 years later, but that's another story.

Well, I blew that. The book's actual title is Building the Blackfish, and the writer was Dana Story, Brad's old man I believe. The photographer was John Clayton; Ten Pound Island, 1988. The boat was built in the spring and summer of 1938.
