I'm trying to enjoy winter but I guess I have had just about enough. Went fishing today and measured 39 to 41 inches in 3 different spots. At least the temp finally went above freezing today and snow is starting to melt. Lowest temp I've recorded here (International Falls, MN) is 32 below zero F., and we had several weeks without getting above zero. Here's a pic of my waterfront in it's hibernation mode. Average ice out here is the first week of May, seems a long way off!

Would it be too much to ask for someone to post a picture of someplace with water in it"s liquid state, or someone enjoying the water with less than 6 layers of clothing on?

up there.
No pics, but tomorrow is our first local race of the year in the Finn dinghies. Unfortunately I will miss this one since I am working, but next weekend and onwards I will be sailing six days out of eight.
Don't worry. It's coming. It'll be here before you know it.

I did see a fellow today skiing across the lake being pulled with a kite. I guess you could call that sailing. He fell several times and really struggled keeping under control. It's quite windy today.

Slow... very slow, some neighborhoods still look very much the way they did 18 months ago. It's sad

I like your boat, too.
You know Jack, the houses and things ain't coming along so quickly, but at least they got the cruise ships and casinos up and operating, right? They gotta do the important stuff first, ya know? :)

Damn, I cant get my head around it getting cold enough to make ice that thick. There are a few smallish lakes here in the South Island (NZ) that occasionaly get thick enough to safely ice skate on. Those of Scottish descent often have to wait several years between each Bonspiel (or whatever it is that a curling match is called - you know, like lawn bowls, but played on ice with large rocks).

hnsbrc,
This is my first whole winter away from Duluth; your pictures are making me home sick. I mowed the lawn yesterday when I should have been ice fishing. We are sending you some more moisture your way, they call it the pineapple express here, I doubt that is the name it will carry when it gets to MN.

I saw pictures at the Top of the River restaurant in Guntersville where in 1940 Lake Guntersville froze thick enough for cars to be successfully driven on it.
Here's a reference to that:

Ahh Spring time. Two weeks ago there was 15" snow on the ground and the snow was pilled to the power lines at the mall.
Last week bare dirt and snow piles only 10' high or so. Some fools have been seen paddling down the rivers!

Hey Frank, I may only be 50 miles north of the Florida border, but I think I still have a modicum of intelligence.

Thanks for the pictures and replys. It's nice to know that water does still exist in the liquid state. Dingo, I'm not sure if hanging out with you with a fan blowing warm air on you in your boxers sounds too inviting, but thanks for the warm thoughts anyway. And Frank, I've been in Florida and I was not too impressed with the average intelligence of the people there either (not to be taken as offense by any one person in particular). One thing for sure, there sure are a lot of people there! I need more elbow room, and 30 inches of ice and 30 below makes for a lot of elbow room, and also keeps me inside working on my current boatbuilding project. On a positive note, it has been warm this week and most of the snow melted, almost to where you can see the surface of that 30 inches of ice.http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid204/pbbcad3c41c803256b96e2e1707cabb64/ef88ab6f.jpghttp://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid204/p3aea8989e9dd296a418e727d3ca4408e/ef85f85b.jpg

Geezzz man, you live in one of the coldest inhabited places in the lower 48. You'd better like winter!
I grew up in the Twin Cities so I remember the weather reports that always seemed to be showing some very cold temperature in International Falls.
I actually rather like winter and would hate living someplace like Florida where there seem to be two temperature ranges:
1. Almost cool enough to be comfortable
2. Godawful hot!
On the other hand, at this end of a winter in a place like International Falls I can understand the desire to see some liquid water outdoors.

Go to the above site and look for the golf course cam. In back of the famous 18th pepple beach hole is the Pacific Ocean and some off shore rocks. It's a current picture and you can watch the golfers in 30 second frames per move.
