Matt J. will (in theory) be here to pick up a bundle of twigs, and we thought that was a good enough reason to have an EBS.
So....EBS at Chez Lefty Friday evening.
RSVP! So I know how much food to prepare.

So.. Matt and Jenny plus assorted dogs heading to CT...
Umm.. No, I can't make it but damn'd if I'm not putting a huge order into Defender on the 30th.. Their annual sale.... Worth me paying Matt to bring some of this back to MD instead of shipping charges.... I mean, he is so close..
And when I say an order, I mean a bloody big order...
I gotta think about this...
I see a buttering up session or a kiss. ____s one in my near future. Umm.. wonder what I have to offer? A few days of labor.. Umm...
Matt J.

It's still a theory, but I'm hopeful it works out.
No Jenny or pups (I don't know what Chez Lefty wants our pack o' hounds). Jes' lil ol' me coming to get my "timbers".

Matt
What route are ya taking? A warning I95 is a bear between the NY line and New Haven. If ya can avoid it, try to do so. Not sure that you can.. I don't think the Merit allows trailers. but......

Umm, I don't see any sourdough on the menu...:(

I can attest to the quality of the repast and the convivial welcome at the polo grounds.
In fact when I saw this thread, I thought of firing up the old Mercury and heading down there.

Seriously, Lefty is a damn'd good cook. I was just rattling his chain for umm.. starters... ;)

Gareth, may I suggest you keep thinking until you decide to head down?
There's been surprisingly little feedback on this.
Where's Ed, Joe, Bruce(x2), and many others reasonably local?
I'll plan on following Doug's original suggestion and heading out Saturday morning; perhaps early, as I need to get these frames done ASAP. I think I have a project for the following weekend(s) which I can't postpone.

I'll be the one, er, two, arriving fashionably late.
(so show up early if you want a crack at any of the comestibles)

The Meritt Pkwy does not allow trailers.
From the New jersey turnpike one can get on the Palisades Pkwy to the Tappan Zee bridge then E. on 287 to I-95. at about Greenwich CT.This route avoids the mish /mash of NYC and the G. Washington bridge. Don't know about trailers on this Pkwy . but trucks are prohibited.

Thanks JD.. I'm gonna file that info away. I thought I had tried every route known to man to avoid NYC and that bit between NYC and New Haven. Not sure I want to end up on I95 in Greenwich though...
J. Dillon
03-23-2007, 10:10 AM
Jamie,
If you are just driving a car , you can take the Merritt off 284 and go up that way. It might initially say something like Hutchinson River Pkwy but I think there is a reference to the Merritt as well.
The sign to the Palisades pkwy might be hard to spot but it is usually the last exit off the approaches to the G.W. bridge. If you miss that one you're committed to go over it into NYC.

JD.. I know the merritt. Have done that route.. the last few times, it was almost as bad as I95... Not only bumpoer to bumper but came close to being involved in several accidents. If I recall six.
Damn good brakes on the old Suburu.
I have really gone to extremes to avoid this mess... NYTHRU to 84, across to 66, down through Middletown.. a slight bummer.. Route 9 to I95.
Still only about 25 miles from Lefty... though... max.....

I'd like a fairly good idea about how many bellies I'll be filling by Wednesday night if possible. I'll be prepping and cooking Thursday and Friday inbetween vets, Dr.s, and working. Someone swing by Fitz's place and steal some cider (If he's not bringing it on his own...).

Oh crap!
My truck's inoperable. Parts not in until Monday at best. I don't know if I'll have time to reseal the swivel balls and pins, replace the pan hard bushings, drag links, and track rods before Friday. Don't think I can take a comany vehicle, and certainly can't afford a rental right now.
I'll let you know what I find out ASAP.
I've never experienced buyer's remorse as with this GD Rover. :(

Ummm.. there maybe an option.
Just have to worry aboput the pooch...
Let me think on this.. Thinking is good.

Rent a freakin' Ryder van for $60 a day and call it good. Jaime can pay for the van and save all that shipping cost! ;)
S.V. Airlie
03-23-2007, 06:45 PM
I don't know Doug.. at 2.50 a gal. and two gal. a mile..
A bit steep. That pays for a lot of shipping.

03-23-2007, 06:57 PM

S.V. Airlie
03-23-2007, 07:04 PM
Doug.. the food would be worth it but.... but..
Now if the Suburu works, at least 26 mpg. No hitch...
AND I have no idea what shipping is gonna be. With the order I'm putting in, everything should be shipped for free... LOL.
Matt J.
03-24-2007, 08:28 AM
Jamie,
Having had a Suby - and one intended to take the abuse of a truck - I wouldn't consider putting the wood in the car. Not only would it barely fit, but it'd play hell on the suspension and interior; old car or not, between you and I and 100BF+ of white oak and the defender order... highly unlikely.
I'm working on an alternative. I think I can make something happen. The Ryder idea isn't horrible, Doug, but I just sent $600 of funds that the war department had otherwise appropriated on parts on a car thats cost well above 3 times that in parts, repairs, and other stuff since buying what was supposedly a pristine example of a 12 year old car... that includes a third party inspection from a dealer who flat out lied ->fortunately, they were brazen enough to do it on paper.
Wow off topic a little?
I'm still hopeful that I'll be there. I think I have another means of getting to CT, and coming home with the oak and Jamie's goods as well. Just not a means I'd hoped to exercise.
Ya see, I've got a good old Volvo, the company Jeep might be made available, and a friend has another Rover he just got running which he suggested might make the trip.

03-24-2007, 08:34 AM
Matt. don't worry about my stuff. Just worry about what you have to pick up and bring back. I was just.. well thinking...
I have a feeling that with the size of the order I have to make, I'll be given some breaks... Okay, maybe I'm just dreaming but...

03-27-2007, 08:56 PM
OK.... Here's the deal. I'll be at the hospital with my father all afternoon tomorrow (Wednesday) I'd like a jello firm count by 7PM if at all possible. Any extras is extra cool. I always make too much.

Doug, I haven't heard back from the sawyer, yet. I'm still planning on driving up tomorrow morning.
Sorry no response last night. Got home to 3 poison oak/sumac encrusted apple trees... you'll get a laugh out of my face (yes, bigger'n usual  ), then went inside to find a busted water pipe. All my tools are at Dad's house for fixing that POS land rover, so I had to go to Home Crappo and buy everything... finally turned the water on at 11 pm... then found the new phone was installed removing the internet conneciton...
need more? Oh, had to drag myself to the far side of DC this mornign to drive little brother to knee surgery...

I don't generally eat sweets, but bring whatever you like.

I'm just waiting on confirmation from the sawyer that the wood's ready... finally spoke with a guy this morning who said "cll back in a half hour and ask the secretary."
???
Matt J.
03-30-2007, 08:27 AM
NO GO for me...
08:15 "will be done today, can pick up by 3pm or tomorrow morning."
Matt quickly gets out of the office duds, and starts walking to the Jeep, when the cell phone rings...
08:20 "will not be done. For what you want he needs a bigger oak pile. he doesn't want to mess you up. Could be a couple weeks..."
:(
I appreciate his being careful, truly I do - the local sawyer is an ass and didn't give a hoot. I just wish they have known last week when they said this week, that it would be a couple weeks. I haven't got a clue (.) how Rarus will get splashed this spring losing yet another 2-3 weekends.
guys, I'm truly sorry. I know Jamie was hoping for transport, and I was really looking forward to meeting all of you and seeing Doug again. I just can't afford an extra trip to CT right now. I've got plenty to keep me busy (playing matt the mechanic  ).
I apologize for bailing at the very last moment.

Matt J.
03-30-2007, 10:51 AM
Folks, I'm so sorry. I don't want to ruin anyone's plans for this evening. As much as I looked forward to meeting you, I wouldn't be the entertaining one anyway - you folks have more and better stories to swap than I do.
And Doug, I don't want you thinking I'd be expensive to entertain - in fact, I'd be more than willing to pick up the tab at the pub and take you and Carter to dinner. You've been quite helpful, as you must know, so there's no expectation of any more hospitality than maybe helping me find my way around, to pete's and perhaps a place to stay. The good company really is icing on the cake for me.
If this evening falls apart, then please accept my apologies everyone. I figured I'd be somewhere around NYC by about now. :( I also figured by the time I'm now picking up the timbers, I'd have frames ready for the boat... perhaps by way of showing that I really wish this change didn't happen...perhaps by way of a poor excuse.
Mrleft8
03-30-2007, 10:58 AM
Don't be silly Matt. We'll do the EBS when you come up. Carter's in Margo-land until Tuesday anyway, so this way I won't have to clean the house until Monday...:D
S.V. Airlie
03-30-2007, 11:03 AM
Geez.. Matt.. stop apologizing. Stuff happens.. Happens to all of us.
Doug said.. not a problem. I say, not a problem but I did order an emergency flare kit from Defender and they can't send it through the mail...;)
There will be a next time.. LOL...
Matt J.
03-30-2007, 11:23 AM
Jamie, as to the flares... I ordered a flare kit for RARUS 3 years ago (4?) and it was shipped. It was more expensive than usual, but it did get shipped. That was post 9/11, but perhaps legislation has been written since?
Don't mean to be silly... hate being the one changing everyone's plans last minute. It would (will) be great to meet everyone whenever the wood's ready. I'll just have to complete the POS LR and weekend contracts before then so I can focus on poor Rarus when I get home from CT. It'll all work out one way or t'other.

Sorry to hear this happened. Its not the norm (wood related not EBS)
I think I'm finally going to spring for an ad in WB. We have access to 100,000's of bdft of quality white oak, black locust, etc. Each time I pop on here I leave frustrated granted woodenboat folks are some of the most frugal folks on the plantet self included. It pains me.
Thanks for the EBS invite Doug will keep in touch.
Ray
Matt J.
03-30-2007, 11:35 AM
raycon, doug, and others:
if Ray's got sufficient BF of black locust in appropriate quality... (hear me out, please)
Rarus had 1x1.25" cross sections for white oak frames. These failed, assumed reason being strength insufficient, external damage, and perhaps fastening sizes inappropriate.
I was going to replace with 1.5x2" cross sections, same locations, in white oak to increase strength. The biggest trouble this leads to is fitting the frame heads behind the sheer clamp, and squeezing the frames between the numerous (too numerous) butt blocks.
What size could black locust be for similar increase in strength? Worth it? They are steamed. Approx 9-10" on center. max length 7', min 5.5'. The sheer clamp allows 1" molded dimension. The butt blocks barely allow 1.25" sided.
On this one, I'm NOT frugal IF the quality is appropriate to the price.
Mrleft8
03-30-2007, 12:07 PM
Far as I know Black Locust, and White Oak are about the same as far as stregth/weight/rot resistence...... BL might be a bit better on the rot side of things. The troble with BL is finding logs big enough that aren't heart rotted, or crooked as..... Politicians in general....
raycon
03-30-2007, 12:30 PM
Matt,
The few shipwrights I know say Black Locust trumps White Oak. I drill and tap it for jig making all the time. Dia .201 drill 1/4 -20 tap. It recieves a fastener well.
Frame size you can calculate the x-section moment of inertia to get a % increase in stiffness. Even though I'm an engineer I'd rather not voice an opinion on this.
Edited Out probably broke a forum rule.

You can't tell but those are Black Locust Kerfed Ribs Sistered in place.
