I have a 1968 wood 33ft LOA OWENS cruiser that has nautilex and non-skid paint over different parts of the decks. Plywood underneath that is in good shape except for a couple of small areas. I would like to put down a wood laid deck over the ply after sealing it with epoxy and cloth, but am undecided on the wood.

Since teak is so expensive and heavy, I thought of doing it in 1/2 inch thick mahogany , but would like some input on that as I didn't see anyone doing anything other that teak and douglas fir on larger boats in the subject search of this site. Any inputs?

Sorry I haven't got any advice on the decking project, it's just nice to see another OWENS owner here. I've got a 1961 Flagship myself.

My deck is Mahogany and although it is a beautiful wood, it has a faster discolouring rate of any other wood - and so it NEEDS to be treated if you want it to look good. UV attacks the wood making it go an ugly grey and I am resorting to using Coelan with thier mahonany primer. It leaves the decks gloss shiny, chris craft style, which may or may not be no ones liking - but it saves a lot heartache.

Use Iroko... looks like teak, a third of the price.

Peter,

Does Iroko work like teak and does it have similar resistance to rotting? Not familiar with it, but think I know where I can get some.
