Here's a question for someone who may have copies of Rudder from the fifties. Ed Cutts designed a 33' foot power boat called SIMPLEX. I don't know when he designed her, but I hear that Rudder Magazine sold copies of the design back in the fifties. The Dyer 29 is purported to be a subsequent scaled down version of her, and that boat was introduced in 1955, which cuts the decade in half at least.

If anyone could find a reference as to what issue the "Simplex" design is in I'd appreciate it. I don't know whether she's referred to by name or designer... or in some other way.

A reference would enable me to go to or make a research request about the correct volume at a museum/library that has a collection.

TIA!

Dyer credits Nick Potter with the Dyer 29 design in 1955...

Found a site that says Mystic has an index of The Rudder:

I saw that. Unfortunately their online index stops at the 1949-50 issues.

I'm told the Seattle Public Library has a collection of The Rudder. You might ring the Reference Desk there and see if one of the reference librarians can help you out[1]). reference librarians tend to like challenges :D

[edited to note: Does The Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature include The Rudder?]

I got a chance to look through a couple of years worth of Rudder magazines from the early fifties. It's probably a blind alley as far as finding the boat plans since the ones in the magazine design sections were not sold through the magazine.

RUDDER published books of designs, like WB's 'Thirty, Forty and Fifty' series. That's where I will have to look.

I have one of those cataloges floating around here somewhere, sigh.

Will see if I can dig it up in the next couple of days.

I have an undated copy of RUDDER'S EASY-TO-BUILD BOAT PLANS. It's probably from the late 60's judging from several advertisements in it. The design you're looking for is not listed. The only design remotely resembling a Dyer 29 is the 31'10" SQUID by Carter & Wittholz. There are no dates listed for any of the designs.

I saw the Squid plans in the old magazines.
