So, has any one made this item yet (the one in this month's woodenboat)
I am afraid it is much too cool an idea not to make!

I didn't see the article.
I did make a nice one that floats verticly in the water, which makes for better balance and easy to pick up if you drop it.
I also recommend putting a long groove in line with the hook part so you can orient the thing for picking up your mooring pendant in the dark.

Yup. Had to try it right away since there was some ash in the shop with nothing in its future. It's stupidly simple to do, and sure feels right, but I haven't had a chance to give it a try--it's just resting on the bench...

Well so much for living in 'America's Finest City' aka 'insane Diego'! Still no new issue of WB here yet, sigh.

It must be simple if you made it between your first post, "posted 10-28-2002 02:40 PM " and the second one, " posted 10-28-2002 03:35 PM "
Good work.

Truly an elegant design.
Never one to let well enough alone, I raise a couple of questions:
Anybody got a clever little jig for the boring of the hole?
Is ash the best choice material? I'm concerned about decay from within the joint. Might white oak, with a locust pin, be better?

I was looking at that too & thinking I might have to make one (& I don't even have a use for it right now)! smile.gif

Primitive. Save your pennys and get an elegant bronze hook.
Okay, that's off my chest so I'll probably make one for a couple of my lesser boats.

At first glance I was stunned that WB had devoted an entire page to such a clunky little thing, but yeah.... there's just something about it. Two simple pieces, fitted and shaped together to perform a few specific functions. There's beauty in that.
Of course, I'm one of those that have learned several times over that anything not actually permanently attached to the boat MUST FLOAT. That goes for boathooks, winch handles, brushes, radios, etc. If I don't drop it overboard myself, sooner or later one of my guests will.

LIGHTBULB!
I know I want one of those boat hooks. AND it just so happens that the sprit boom for my new boat measures 7'-0" x 1-1/2". So, I figure the boom could be made the same as the boat hook. That way I will have a spare.

John, some things I can do quickly, but not that fast. I think I built it Wednesday last week. Taking out the interruption for dinner, it was a puttering job of maybe three hours. Folks as use more powertools than I do--routers, jointers and such--could shorten that some.
Now if I can just manage to get around to weighting the handle, a final sanding, and putting some boat sauce on it...
