Good boat places to see - things to do - wine to drink? Just the wife and I - no kids this time.

The north-west corner of the lake has a number of marinas, and if you can get on the water the entire west shore is pretty interesting all the way down to Emerald Bay. The south shore is shallow and mostly jet-ski heaven, but might be rewarding to explore.

The east shore is largely unprotected, not a lot of boat stuff going on except a bit on the south-east corner of the lake.

Be aware that Tahoe sits on top of the Sierras, and gets high winds from multiple directions -- they lose 40' boats occasionally, and having been in one storm in my San Juan 21 I can easily understand how this can happen.

Too bad the wooden boat show is in August. You ought to see that sometime if you haven't already.

Hacker,

You might want to visit the temporary site of the Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood.

Dine at Garwoods

And you should definitely visit the Sierra Boat Company.
DO NOT bring your checkbook! :-)

Edited to add: You should visit Emerald Bay (Thorne's pic). A 20 minute walk down the hill (bring some water) gets you to a beautiful stone mansion overlooking a stunning fjord. Guided tours if you like, and often classic speedboats nosed up on the beach/picnic area. Truly beautiful.

Did you say wine?

Hey Hacker,

A couple more thoughts from the wife...

Stay at the Sunnyside Lodge. Most rooms overlook the lake.
I think they do boat rentals, but $$$!!

But eat breakfast across the street at the Firesign Cafe.
Killer breakfasts...

Thanks for the goog input.
I may get a chance to drive past there this summer.

When is the wooden boat show exactly in August?

August 10-11th is the Concourse d'Elegance -- my step-sister-in-law told me about it last night at Easter dinner, as they are one of the corporate sponsors.

Well, it would need a ruined house and hourly cruises by huge faux-Mississippi-paddlewheeler tourboats to really be like Emerald Bay.

I anchored there 15 years ago and the wake from the tourboats nearly rolled my San Juan 21 up onto the beach, but I think they have gotten a bit more careful these days. A lovely spot nonetheless!

Thanks we may be passing down around that time. I might be able to convice swmbo that we "need" to leave Portland a bit earlier than we planned.

Let's pray.
