So it seems I'm not the only one to buy a boat from Atlantic Challenge last week. Look at this little beauty:

She's the double ended knockabout that WoodenBoat sells the plans for. Drawn by Fenwick Williams in 1929. She looks like Annie's little sister. :)

Well we were not intending on buying a boat this year. Acouple of weekends ago Gail and I went with Steven and Hugh to look at the Bauer's new Oskust and Steven just happened to mention that the Alden 21 was for sale also. So one thing led to another and.......

The obligatory "down the driveway" pic.

The cradle that replaced the stands I borrowed from AC (Atlantic Challenge). Thanks you, to them. ( This happend unexpectantly and I could not roust up some used stands in time. )

And the spartan interior which will be great for camp cruising along the coast.

Particulars: She was built in Louisiana in 1995. 21' x 7' x 3' x 4600#. The builder used pitch pine for the keel, cypress for the stem and stern, white cedar on steamed white oak frames, copper riveted. There was an original motor but was scavenged sometime ago. So anyone wanting to get rid of a 6hp or so marine diesel please contact me.

I think formites should stop going to Atlantic Challange for a while. They all go home with boats...:D

Who is next?

psss. As Hughman lives so close, I'm surprised he hasn't put on an addition to the barn. I mean, what's another boat.????

I don't know the answer to that question. I would like to find the builder and see if perhaps he sailed her up the coast from LA and donated her to AC back in 2003-4. Her latest registration is 2003 season.

So Eric what needs to be done on your new family addition?

emichaels

Well Jamie that is an open ended loaded question for sure. I would say she could go right in and be used. I would feel better scraping and repainting the hull so I know what is under the paint and know that the planking is protected. I suppose a motor is desired though I would think I could use a sculling oar or sweep in the harbor. Of course all the things I would 'like' to do and 'need' to do are far apart.

I would like to re-rig her as a gaff with a new hollow mast, but that will probably wait till winter when the new boat shed is up and running.

So I guess scrape/paint and some kind of motor will probably happen before she floats again.

Sorry for the loaded question. Steven, as you know, has bought a beautiful little craft but the interior needs some work. Cosmetics too but all boats need that. Oh and painting the hull etc. normal...
I was just wondering. Re-rigging, engine etc. can be added as you say.
She looks great... Good luck with her. Where are ya gonna keep her?

I suppose that is why we like wooden boats , there is always something else that could be done.......allows for a little dreaming and scheming !

I hope we will go in at East End (Promenade) in Portland. Steven is putting his Oshkust there and it is fairly close to us. We played around down there last year with the Shellback and like the waters there alot. It doesn't seem very crowded and there is a lot of room to move around.

Eric,

How will you move her for launch? Do you have to contract w/another boat mover?

PS: I'm surprised the roads were passable this time of year up there (mud and all that from snow melt).

Our road , out to the highway does not usually get posted so we are clear for that stuff. I ordered some threaded rod and nuts and will fabricate some boat stands to put under her so a boat trailer will be able to get under her. We will move her outside after we hot top the drive. Its to soft right now. After mud season !

Eric,

Welcome to the Double-ender Owners Club. What a neat little boat. She's the same size as Sjogin and probably just as handy. Let's see some deck and cockpit pics.

Congratulations,

Russ
