So a buddy of mine, Wade Smith, is running the John Gardner Small Boat Workshop this June. I am letting everyone know about. He has asked me to speak etc. at it. He has also planned this one a bit further in advance than others and lowered the cost among other great improvements.

I will be there with some of the WBRF Restoration Class people and one of the boats on which we are working.

Also there is a good interest in RAID type boats and Raids in general.

We are trying to gather as many Faerings as possible for this weekend---I will bring two. Anyone out there have one or know of any, please pass the word and get to this event. Please let us know if you know of any Faerings in your area.

Here is the listing for the JGSCW (early pre-release-version. I hope Wade does not mind :-)

Cheers, Bruce

Featured at the 38th Annual John Gardner Small Craft Workshop:
Calling all Apprenticeshop-built boats, Faerings, and Raid boats!

Over the same 38 years that the JGSCW has existed, Lance Lee has been responsible for the building of many boats and many boatbuilders, in an ever-widening circle (see WoodenBoat #114). This year, we feature a presentation by Lance Saturday evening at 8:00, reflecting on those last 40 years and looking towards the next 40. We also wish to gather as many of those boats and boatbuilders as possible who claim Lance as part of their impetus – so if you are a graduate of one of the incarnations of the Apprenticeshop, or if you have a boat that was built by someone who is, we invite you to join us.

Particularly, we expect several Norwegian faerings, many built by Apprenticeshop graduates. Saturday afternoon, we will have a discussion of Scandinavian boatbuilding, including some people who served part of their boatbuilding apprenticeship in Norway on traditional boats. Again, if you have an example of traditional Norse boatbuilding, it would be great to have it in attendance (in or out of the water).

WoodenBoat Magazine and the Down East Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association are co-sponsoring their second annual small craft meet on Eggemoggin Reach in Brooklin Maine, the week of August 19-25, 2007 – the Small Reach Regatta. We will have Tom Jackson, Senior Editor of WoodenBoat here to give a presentation about how this event evolved from the popular “Raids” in Europe, what this year’s trip will consist of, what kinds of boats are appropriate, and the gear and skills a well-prepared boat and crew should have. If you and your boat have participated or are planning to participate in the SRR, come join us!

New This Year:

We are offering a 10% discount for early registration: Any registrations received by Friday May 18, 2007 (two weeks before event) will receive 10% off any category of registration fee. This does not apply to Conrad accommodations.

For those arriving Friday night, we will have an evening workshop on steam bending wood at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, we're featuring two new activities that aren't, strictly speaking, boat related: Tim Reilly, rigger and musician at Mystic Seaport, will be giving a talk and demonstration on Scrimshaw in the White Boat Shop at 11:00 a.m., and there will be a walking tour of the fantastic Mystic Seaport Gardens with Head Gardener Leigh Knuttel, departing from the Clagett Boat Shed at 2:00 p.m.
