Another thread raise the topic of what happens to young long distance cruisers once they swallow the anchor and move ashore.
The question seems to be "Do they find happiness?"

The Martins (who had a booth at the Maine Boat Builder's Show) have written about their time afloat and now ashore in Maine in this series of 'journal entries': http://www.setsail.com/s_logs/martin/martin.html

Tania Aebi (who lives in Vermont IIRC) has posted here: http://www.sailnet.com/forums/search.php?searchid=265061

I saw that name on the other forum. A name outta the past. Wow...it almost seems as though the world was flat and they fell off. Umm..

Patrick Childress (who I'm lucky to have as a friend) gained some fame by sailing in a Catalina 27. http://www.catalinayachts.com/pdf/halfoffame/ACFB0.pdf

When I saw him last fall he was putting the final touches to a Valiant 40, and was planning to sail again. Superb guy.

The last that I read about Robin Graham was that he is married and living in Montana

Saw the Martins at the Maine Boatbuilder's Show; they're planning a cruise to Labrador this summer aboard Driver.

I was just making a reference to someone's comment on another thread about how they'd heard he and his wife had moved to Montana. I haven't got any other info.

And he wrote a book in the 70's about those experiences; I haven't seen/heard ANYTHING about what his current life is like, if he's still married, what the kids turned out like... or even if he's still alive, although I would suspect that it would be hard to keep things under wraps if he died. I got the impression that he had a very difficult time dealing w/ the notoriety/attention that comes from doing something at such a young age.

He did write a second book describing his life fitting in, yes they went to montana built a log cabin, had a few kids. He went thru some bouts of depression,

the followup book, Home Is The Sailor, was published in 1983.

I met Robin Graham at a local picture theatre after a screening of The Dove. I can remember much of the conversation (being about 7 years old at the time) but the movie left a lasting impression.

rbgarr, I think it was me who mentioned RLG on the other thread. I asked Paladin if he had any info, as he said he used to know Robin and his family. I don't think Paladin responded. Thanks for the lead on the book Mike. I'll check it out.

For more on the Martins also check out the following: a preview of Ice Blink- a documentary on their travels www.TheSailingChannel.com and the Martins website www.iceblinksail.com . In the spirit of full disclosure, I was the producer for Ice Blink.

Greg-

I saw Jaja give a talk locally and screen Ice Blink. Very very enjoyable and you all did a really good job. The 'script' wasn't too 'gaga' or overly romanticized about what they do/did.

Last year, I met someone who knew the Grahams and continues to exchange Christmas cards with them. They are alive and well and still living in Montana. As I recall, she indicated they were grandparents now.
