Aloha ...Im new here. I have a 30 foot lapstrake mahoagany sailboat with a teak deck.
It was built in 1972 in Canada. Her name is Olivia.
I bought her for $9000 and have dropped over 40000K in her in the last 4 years. She is my woman. I have learned alot from her. I used to be a motorhead and getting into wood has open up a new world of intrest for me. At first and sometimes still I am a bull in a china shop but have learned to be more delicate. I hope to communicate with you folks in the future. It seems ome folks even post boat related threads. Cool. aloha

Just to the left of the photo off the harbor wall. Frieght Trains they call it. Maalaea is a terrible Harbor. Its has an Ocean facing entrance. The swell comes right in and the surge just destroys boats.

Hey Unc,
You can tell carvel from lapstrake (also called "clinker") by the surface texture. Carvel planking is smooth. The plank edges meet each other at the same level (the level of the frames). Lapstrake planks overlap (get it?) each other like clapboard siding on a house, so you get long ridges (the keel side edge of each plank) running fore and aft. Nuthin' to it.

Here's a lapstrake boat for comparison, Unc:

Sadly, it's not in Maui.....
