I guess if you have more money than you know what to do with, this is the kind of thing you do. "What are you doing today, dear?" "I dunno, but maybe I'll hire an engineer and have him re-invent the wheel. Shouldn't cost more than $3 or $400 K, right?"

designed by Juliusz Strawiński of Poland, I know the boat as she is a sister of my old boat "White Eagle" Gaff Cutter,(see a picture on the website)

hmm lets see if this works

the boom idea was the client, or designer did not want the massive mainsheet arrangement so he dreamed this up- the boat is no eyecandy but here sister White Eagle makes up for it, I loved Her, Worked on her in the Carib for 5 months and had the time of my life, then came a real classic called Sylvia but that is another story.....

Never use a couple simple hunks of rope when you can use some sort of big, ugly welded contraption instead!

I have crewed twice, in good weather, on boats with those damned rollup-in-the-mast reefing systems. I hate'em. I would hate to get caught in a sudden squall with that rig. It takes too many people too long to get the sail down (or in).

...rollup-in-the-mast reefing systems....

I was on a charter boat with that system once and it made me very nervous. Furling it up had to be done very carefully or the sail would jam. Lousy sail shape, too.

Speaking of wierd, check out this latest America's Cup boat

http://www.americascup.com/en/acmag/features/tech_design/index.php?idIndex=1257&idContent=13613

Notice though, they covered it with milar(?) to streamline it.

It may be covered with mylar to gain unrated sail area. I don't know what rules they use on cup boats, but the practice is quite common on some racing boats (like Skeeter iceboats).

I was wondering if that's why they were doing.

Ratings rules have spawned some really weird stuff!

and you have a "schooner rigged trimaran sailing kayak".

I do like the idea of supporting the mast up to the gooseneck, but there are simpler ways to do that.

straight forward engineering though, not a way around a rule ;)
