Okay I know.. it is still a month before I leave for NS.. actually less than that.
I'm gonna put out feelers for interested crew members. Plenty of time to think about it.. but thought I would post now as opposed to the day I leave.
Gunkholing.. no direct run to Cape Cod..
Thinking about a trip down the Maine coast.
Leave Mahone Bay about the 10th of June.. No set schedule yet.. but parameters are here.. Mystic.. June 28th.. perhaps. Maybe a day earlier.. perhaps a day later.
psss. will also be looking for someone to drive my car back.. at least as far as Maine.

Think positive. Put me on the list for part of the trip.:)

I have a few weeks to play...

LOL!...... Oh...... You'll have PLENTY of time to play!.....;) :D It really is nice to see someone remain so optimistic even with the years of experience to the contrary!.... :D

how ya gonna find out where ya ain't.......gotta sextant, charts, HO214? Have ya started a 90-120 day check on your favorite tick tock to determine how slow/fast it is each day?:D

Well Chuck I have some of what you listed.. I keep thinking I should get a sextant though... I keep looking but even the cheap ones are well..ummm...
I gotta spend my bucks where it counts.. A compass obviuously comes first... Got the charts though and a few odds and ends to see which way is up.
Now Doug.. My few weeks of play reference was to a trip up west... Not a few weeks until I leave which is also true.

I have a sextant I'd be happy to long term loan you.

I think I can be available at the start - should be back from Oregon by about then. Have sextant, will travel.
Oh crap. I've just got tagged with a major consultation process through then, and won't be able to get out from under.
Jamie, you've got all my envy stowed away. Wish I could hope to join it.

My contract with the College ends on June 8th. I am committed to put on a composites seminar on June 11-13th. After that I'm due for some fun, I think. Not to wish you ill will, but a week's delay in your departure would be excellent timing for me to assist in the passage from NS to Maine, where I could catch the Cat back to Yarmouth.

Jamie;
I could probably swing some time off by then. How many hands were you looking for?

Jamie....ya need a nautical almanac or three.....
Since you're a scotsman dunno go buy a new one....just get 4 old copies....they gotta be consecutive....
New ones cost lotsa bucks...folks throw the old ones away.....BUT...
they repeat...so get a 1980,81,82, and 83.....then mark the 1980 one 1984, the 1981 book becomes 1985 and so on....and keep repeating.......see..only someone part scots would thinka that.....:D

Thanks all.. I am guessing three or four people max...
mmd.. always weather dependent.. One week of good weather and I could be in Mystic.. One week of bad weather, I could be hung up in SW Harbor, ME.
Obviously, have no set date for departure.
Will be able to talk to the NS group when I get up there.
Ian.. Great! Perhaps you will be around from Maine to umm Cape Cod.
Ken.. You are welcome.. even for a day sail.
I think all is covered for the moment.
If I missed someone.. sorry ... however, I'll be saving the thread and reviewing it as it gets closer to May...

I won't be available to sail, I would be useless anyway.
But if you need assistance while passing through Maine I will be here to help.

Tyler..
Thanks.. You are in Gray.. somewhere betwixted and between.. I am assuming you could catch up with us in Portland.. guessing that is the closest.
I figure.. as this is gonna be a maiden voyage so to speak, that I might come up Casco Bay and go to Falmouth Foreside or even Portland for a night.
There are a few formites in that area..:D... An EBS on Airlie is a possibility.
I figure, if I can keep to some kind of scedule and taking into account mmd's schedule, I will have two weeks to get from Mahone Bay to Mystic.. So, there might be some flexibility there as to routes and stops.
As you know, this is gonna be a maiden voyage for me as well. New rig for me.. Nope.. never sailed a schooner...just always liked them.

I hope to be in your shoes someday, a schooner in my hands.
I am not much of a sail sailor, though Gareth has kindly offered to help me in that regard and I do plan to tap his wealth of knowledge.
I wish you fair winds an following seas on you journey Jamie.
I hope to follow someday. I will be nearby and ready to help.

Good choice.. Gareth has been around several blocks... And I hope you do. Steven is gonna be a good source in a few years. He has the basics but this is his first boat and owning a boat is a great experience.... He will do well too.:D One thing about boats.. it is a constant learning process..;)
And keep in mind.. You will get there... I didn't buy a boat until I was 45... Sailed since diapers but did not take the plunge until then.

I'd love to sign on, but I probably won't have the time to go to NS for an extended trip down. Where after Mystic? I could help get her through the Sound and the city, I've sailed it.

John.. one thing being retired is I have no schedule.. As Chuck so aptly put this. a puff boat does not have an ETA just a destination. I'm gonna spend a few months bouncing around.. Where? Umm...Anywhere between NE. and NS..
So, if ya want a day sail just to get out...etc... I would be happy to have you aboard.
jamj
oh.. and I grew up there.. LIS etc. too...
Pretty open schedule here. I'd be happy to take a week or so somewhere in there, probably better closer to Mystic. Cape to Mystic, maybe?
Gotta check out the stuff in Newport. Find out what I'm supposed to be doing there. Keep me in mind for some of the trip.

heck elf.. I gotta line ya up for some photos. I ain't gonna let boat #2 go by without photos... I look back on 9 yrs on Uncas and don't have a photo to show for it.
Anyway, I'm gonna float for a few months.. Nantucket.. Marthas Vin. Cape Cod, Naragasket Bay.. Buzzards Bay LIS..
No hurry.. no ETA.. actually no destination.. Makes it easy. I be where I be at any particular moment. Except for Mystic.. gotta be there.. and there are no alternatives.. Be there or else...
Then again, if ya just want to go for a sail.. off the clock.. no problem!

Your plan sounds good. It's the kind of future I look forward to also. I sail out of Mt Sinai, let me know when you're in the area. I'd love to see your boat. If some sailing or crewing can be worked in that would be great.

Well Jamie, we're expecting the stork late June, and business is heating up again - so getting away is problematic... But if you plan to make the Mid-Atlantic WBF Regatta, I'd be happy to hang off'n yer bow shouting off fathoms - or inches as the case may be... Or a quick dive to check your bottom. And if you need to make a run down NJ and through the rippers to the cut (though I dont know why you would) I can help you there too. You should have my number. Call me if you need anything.

Knock.. I'll wait to see what dates you choose.
I'm torn. I would really like to enter some reaces for the old pharts.. drivers and boats..:D And as yet, I have not compiled them or figured out schedules around them. I know there is on in Nantucket in Aug.. a few scattered here and there.. The Gov. Cup in CT in mid Sept.
I'm gonna bite the bullet and join some organizations.. mostly Schooner Assoc. to get a handle as to what is going on and when..
I want to see if Airlie is as fast as many people have told me.. At least fast enough, considering her age to put some noses outta joint..
ps.. thanks for the offer and umm congrats on the upcoming arrival of the stork...
You might want to think about the MOY classic race weekend on Labor Day. Fabulous company you'd be in there.
Herreshoff might even let you in to the Rendezvous the weekend before up off Bristol.

elf.. Umm.. not familiar with MOY...
I do know there are a lot of races for the old pharts throughout the summer..
I'm just gonna have to track them down, put them on paper and schedule..
Thanks for the suggestion...
ps.. Not sure if Herreshoff would approve of an interloper built in Canada...

If you'll be doing weekend races I can crew pretty much anytime after July. So any weekend races up in the sound and around the Cape, you can count me in for.

Knock.. although I don't have dates. I suspect that most will be weekend races... Of course, I ain't sure but it makes sense.
I'll keep you in mind...:D
elf.. Umm.. not familiar with MOY...
Museum of Yachting - Newport. Big End-of-summer Deal around those parts. Beautiful boats come out to play.

elf.. that makes sense.. Thanks...
you don't need a sextant and a watch and all that stuf. Take a couple of hand held GPS's.
