View Full Version : looking for a designer....

im still not yet completely satisfied that the 28' Susan is the right boat for me next time. i guess maybe im a little bothered by downsizing from Decatur being 42'. still, with singlehanding offshore in mind, its the sail handling that is my main priority. i still want a gaff cutter but the main needs to be managable by me in foul weather etc etc. im a tall slender woman but still strong enough to sail on my own and i want to retain that independence of sailing on my own. so the boat/rig needs to be 'girl friendly'!
so....what im perhaps looking for is a designer who could take on the task of drawing me a yacht of say 35' tops, that would be just an overgrown version of the Susan as i love her lines completely.
can anyone help or make some suggestions.
thanks.

What do you think of Paul Gartside's designs?

Also in this neck of the woods is Tad Roberts. This 38er was recently drawn for another forum member, I think, and had several rigs sketched out, including a cutter:

Gartside's #111- except for the underbody she reminds me of a gaff cutter version of MAGIC.

David Payne is quite the gaff enthusiast, and local, relatively. Ed Burnett as well as the others above.

Bernadette:

I second the Paul Gartside recommendation. He is a neat guy and a fine designer.

If you could live with a well-moulded glass hull, there is a lovely design, Lyle's final one before his eyesight failed him, the Falmouth 34. I am just completing the rig drawing now for a gaff version.

Thanks for the compliment, if you mean our MAGIC!

Cheers,

Craig Johnsen

I was half expecting outrage that I made the comparison!!

If I were to build and go singlehanded cruising, this design would be a strong contender. The only changes I'd make would be different autopilot and galley sink higher in the boat.

There's a fellow named Michael Mason you may wish to contact. I've heard good things said about him, too. ;)

Bernadette: You might be interested in Mark Smaalders Kahuna or one of his smaller designs.http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid142/p13eb826901df3f2e10fd368fda6768f8/f6c0253d.jpg

The 28' Common Sense Sloop was origionaly designed for a woman to single hand. You can see my own version "Red Witch" under Jay's Boats in the photos section of the Yohoo Groups Site "Common Sense Boats".

Good luck with your search Bernadette. I always have liked Mr. Atkins and his designs...... wish he were still around. Eric seems to be a nice cruising boat to my eye.

Those guys at Brooklin Boatyard are real good, and draw very fine looking craft.

Mr. Gartside's draws beautiful boats too, and seems a good fellow to work with.

Chuck Phillips might have a drawing or two for you to peruse......? Chuck??

I sent her the 30/32 prints for the Hess boat by private e-mail, Garland. I have them in my computer, I have a 36 lines/framing finished, and a 41 foot version of Tana Mari.....I have a 25/26 "Hobo" that's almost finished...sorta a cross between a Flicka/St. Valery/Hess 26......in a wierd sorta way. Number 3 son sold the Thunderbird and wanted a bigger/beamier/heavier boat for the areas around Seattle and Vancouver but he needed to keep it in the driveway during the winter months.......and I gotta finish Rribbitt......Ray wants me to draw him a faster/prettier hull for the old Pelican that I gave him, but he wants to use all the sails and hardware from it so I henscratched a strip planked pram design that should suffice....and Mikey, grandcritter #3 wants a boat to float in his rubber pond......I wanted to make a small scale submarine that would shoot small torpedoes with cherry bomb warheads......but Mary nixed that....no sense of humor...

garland, i had a chuckle at your post...you see...mr atkin's "dragon" was the design we built "pequot" to in 1996...what i had intended on doing my world cruise in, in the first instance!!!
oh well!!!
although im loking at a bigger design now, it would take some serious drop dead gorgeous beauty of a design to better the "susan" and well, i do have to becareful of getting greedy and going 'big' again and being unable to handle my new boat with ease on my own. i aspire to the notion always, that any mug can go out in fine weather, but you get a real handle on both your own capabilities and the boat's handiness when you are stuck out in a real blower doing it all on your own...and that is the yardstick i'm using to measure my next boat by.

Well, I sure hope you find a designer that can help you develope the ideal boat for your purpose and aspirations........

Well, Atkins sure did draw some fine boats, huh?

Good luck Bernadette!

Hi Bernadette

You're an Aussie, and David Payne is an excellent local designer with a good sense of traditional boat design. Get him to design you a 30-35' boat modelled on a pearling lugger. He knows them well and he's a very nice guy as well. I know he'd love a project like that.

Cheers

Tony
