Jeez, the mainmast in the middle of the cockpit is kind of short, isn't it?

Jamie, don't believe me or anyone else here. Get a good surveyor from the US up there to check this out.
Best of luck to you! We are on your side.

pcford.. A suggestion..i.e. a surveyo in the US... Umm there are very few in the US, I would even consider being a Good surveyor. Such a person does exist I suppose but believe me.. not often.
Now I do have one comment. When my father was looking for workmen who knew wooden boats for Mystic.. he had to go to NS and Lab. to find them.. Why because they did not exist in the US.
okay.. my next boat will be glass...
I understand your concerns... but my last boat was tech. taken care of etc. by a reputable company and whwere did that get me...?

What the hell is your point here? Do you actually believe that there aren't any good surveyors in Canada? Do you really think that Canadians need advice from American craftsmen to be able to do a good job?
Think about what you are saying!

It is not always easy to find a good wooden boat surveyor in a place with which you are not familiar. I assume Jamie would be able to find one quicker in his locality.
Some of the finest boats ever made were built north of the border.
I am not trying to be snide; I'm just trying to help. None of this is meant to upset anyone needlessly.

My next boat will be glass....Then we will have a lot of issues to discuss.
Pcford.. I have gone through my list... A lot of Canadians have written coments hat have gone against you. I have tried to take both sides.. yours and others into account.
You mention a serveyor.. There are very few in the states.. You have mentioned that others should review the work. I can deal with that and talk to them.
I'm gonna ask a question.. Do you trust someone like mmd or Howard (HR) or reddog or John verl. as to having some knowledge? I do... I also can not deny the years of experience offere by those at the yard.
No, I can't be 100% postive they are right but I trust them

pipefitter.. I would like to think the people redoing the boat are profesionals as well.
I guess it comes down to.. what is a professional doesn't it? Who am I to say those here are better or worse than those I am paying to do the work or do you want to go round with them.
You are right.. I am a neophyte when it comes to reconstruction... Am I supposed to take your word, as a professional over another preofessional's. Tell me what to do? Tell one is lying? I don't think so. Tell a preofessional he is wrong because another professional says so? I don't think so...
I really am trying to do my best but ya know sometimes, if I get two professionals in a room and ask them the same question, I'll get two responses. You throw the darts...
So. tell me, who is to be believed...?
ps.. I am not mad.. I just think you are asking me to pit professionals against what I call propfessionals and that leaves me between a rock and a hard place.

For what it's worth, I'm not a surveyor and I don't play one on TV. It's no secret that I have opinions, that's not an issue - the only question is if my opinions should have any weight. My opinion on this is:
You're hiring experienced people who care about their reputation. Win, lose or draw, you gotta trust them. I'm thinking that it all looks pretty nice, especially given that this is a boat which will be actively used, not a boat which will be entered in concours events. If something is looking funky 5 or 10 years from now, you can fix it then and you can decide at that point if you want to curse someone.
In the meantime, I think you're on the right course - get it done, get it sailing, and get moving. Cecil and crew have done this stuff for a long time - if their work was lousy they wouldn't still be in business.
Declare victory and move on.

I really would not call it a victory Uncle... I just see professionals with opinions arguing with professionals. I'm a neophyte yes.... And as such.. it is hard for me to say one or the other is correct.
Such is life...
So.. how are things with your boat Uncle.. any updates?

Back in the day (you remember the day right?) folks would say that opinions are like Mustangs. Everyone had one. Mine is such. Airlie is a workboat right? Cecil and Co. build and fix work boats, right?. So, my opinion is that Airlie is in good hands and getting the right and proper treatment she requires, no more, no less. I think she looks great and will serve you well, for many years to come. I can't wait for that wee dram in the cockpit;)

Sorry for being unclear - what I meant by 'victory' was "You've got a lovely boat, it's going to be in better shape than it's been in a very long time, and you're going to be happily sailing in 4 weeks or so".
So.. how are things with your boat Uncle.. any updates?
I'll send you a PM, but the upshot is that I'm moving her to a nice little yard which is more favorable to my working on her, which can do the 'heaving lifting' work (new deck and cabinhouse) and which is also lots cheaper. So there's progress afoot.
David Gage innocently made a comment above that deserves correction (no insult taken, David; just clarification for the other readers of this thread). Yes, Clarence R. Heisler & Sons Ltd. has built workboats over its eighty-six year history, but for the past fifty or so they have primarily built yachts, as the photos below attest.

I love that last picture of the crib work ways. I'd seen drawings of them but wasn't clear how they were used. Those skid cradles are very clever.
Jamie- I was telling my neighbor about your trials with UNCAS and phoenix-like rise with AIRLIE. He's impressed with your single handing life choice and hopes to meet you if you sail in here. He'll have questions for you about the tides and currents in the Gulf of Maine and would be thrilled with any photos you take of overfalls off the southern tip of NS. He's been computer modelling a tide/current chart for the waters here and I'm encouraging him to publish something like an Eldredge's for Maine waters.

MMD. Those are beautiful pictures, boats, and work. Thank you for posting them. They show to me even more that Airlie is in the best, capable hands.

mmd.. great shots.. If I didn't know any better Airlie looks as though she be the second boat getting wet.
David T. Umm.. I plan on being there sometime. As I mentioned, I may have relatives on Squirrel.... another reason. I'll keep pictures in mind re: NS.. Gulf of Me... if I go this route.
After the WBS.. umm just time on my hands.:D
And umm look at the background in Micheal's photos.. umm what beautiful country to sail in... drool.. but I'll stop drooling this summer...
