Our new design KOALEN 695 is almost finished. The first one will be built in Turkey and we proramme to lunch her during April / may 2008.

In the bloodline of Ebihen and Ebihen 18, Koalen is also inspired by the traditional crabbers of Brittany. I have chosen a length just under 7 metres, with a generous loaded displacement approaching 3 tonnes. This allows a satisfactory confort for coastal cruising.
Accommodations include 4 berths (V-berth convertible into double), head (marine type or Porta-Potti) in the fo'c'sle, a well dimensioned galley, a chart table sliding over a quarter berth, a dinner table stowed over the other quarter berth.
The strip planked hull is sheathed outside and laid over transversal and longitudinal plywood bulkheads. As on my other designs, the home builder as well as the professional will benefit from an exceptional ease of construction. A good amount of lateral plane and a heavy ballast keel will give, for such an old looking boat, windward performances that will astonish many sailors. The long keel will also make quiet the most anxious skipper when drying out. The legs themselves are stowed under side deck in cockpit area.
A 10 hp about diesel engine is suggested. The propeller does not need any notch into rudder in order not to impair steering efficiency. Alternatively, an outboard motor may be fitted into a well at centreline just in front of rudder.
Koalen is a gaff cutter, a rig perfectly right for this powerful hull. The moderate area of staysail and jib, the simple rig without running backstay, make Koalen easily manoeuvrable by a 2 persons crew. The mast is stepped in a tabernacle to allow un-rigging without external aid.
