Hi from a wet and windy west Wales.

A friend and I are terminally smitten with all kinds of wooden sailing boats, be they racing, cruising, work boats or larger craft. Due to this we have launched a website with the express aim of cataloging as many typical boat and ship types in a uniform line drawing format as we can. As we come from Wales we have started with the meagre records of Welsh boats and larger sailing craft. Welsh inland craft such as coracles and curachs will follow. We have also started on the working boats of England's east coast with a Lowestoft trwaler.
We intend to build the site into a record by region and country.

The question is which indigenous boats and ships would you include as typical of your region or country. This is not a sales pitch but a serious request for help. Any photos or plans of your suggestions will be gratefuly received. To view the collection so far - www.traditionalsailingships.com

Diolch yn Dalpe / Thanks a lot

Sorry to be the curmudgeon, but this seems like a commercial enterprise to me. In effect, you are soliciting lines & construction drawings and details for re-sale at a profit. That is sorta the definition of a business, isn't it? That would make the posting above an advertisement for a business, which is a no-no on the forum.

I think that this post needs a Scot review. What do others think?

Agreed about the advertising aspect... AND good luck with the effort!

Hello again and thanks for the comments.

I don't think this is going to be a commercial success to rival Walmart or anything. The idea behind trying to sell limited edition prints is that it will defray a very small part of the time and money put into research. I just thought that every one out there must have an opinion on what types of vessels were typical of their region or country before GRP and steel took over the world.
In Wales where we have a dismall attitude to maritime heritage our museum service is far more interested in coal mines, slate quarries and ration books, only one Welsh schooner still exists and even coracles are now built of GRP! The aim is to build over time a regional record of the world's traditional boats and to record in video some of the skills that went with them if possible. Who is going to fund a project like this otherwise?
As I said in my initial message this is not a sales pitch and as for soliciting lines drawings, I'm not, I only asked for suggestions of types , I'll do the research myself, although any help anyone offers will be most gratefully received (Thanks Stephen)

Thanks again - diolch yn dalpe
