So we here on the forum keep getting questions about how small a boat a person can cross an ocean in, the underlying assumption apparently being that smaller is cheaper.

And I like to point out that there are lots of boats, some free, in the 25-30 foot range that are much more suitable, presumably after a certain amount of work has been done to them, and no more expensive than building an 18-foot microcruiser from scratch.

So I open the latest issue of "Messing About in Boats" today and find this listed. It's already crossed an ocean a few times. I know nothing about this boat or the owner. The boat could be a death trap for all I know.
But I've copied it as an example of the many listings like this out there -- many from non-profits who take boats as donations and then sell them cheap.

So what's with the determination to build a glorified bathtub for offshore sailing? Is it ego -- got to go in my own creation -- or fear of an older boat no matter how well built? Or is it the mistaken notion that the smaller boat will be somehow easier to handle? I don't get it.
