Sure, but "degraded" as able seaman since a well known person was in control of the tiller.

Fantastic! You're clicking along nicely in that shot. My eyes can't tell who's in the boat but a guess at ACB?

Absolutely fabulous Martin.

A dream trip to Europe at this time of year:

The LeMans MotoGP (won by an Aussie of course)

The Rum Regatta - the Baltic Trader would be nice

A day on the Nordschlieffe (sp?) - the 21km Nurburgring in a decent car - and a lap with Sabine Schmidt

A day before the RumRegatta I initiated a 1st ship home race from Sonderburg (Denmark) to Flensburg, because most of the ships are in Sonderburg anyway before they sail to Flensburg. I was on the ACTIV that day.

Well the waterpolice always gives us the weatherreport at the skippers meeting. This times they talked about 4-5Bft(9m/s) southwest saying it it will turn to west with 3Bft(6m/s) later in the day.

The funny thing is that when we rounded the buoy with just the foresail and a reefed main I still dragged my rail through the water and the fjord was full of white horses. So I don't really believe the 3Bft crap the police was telling us about...

Surprise, surprise...Colin Archer didn't just design doubleenders...

Wow Andrew - I had not heard of that tallship database website! Incredible. I saw the bit about Mirelle in the Colne barge and Smack race too - nicely done. I will have to spend some more time on that site....

Marcio

Well those "Marinekutter" are boats that have been in use since the German Imperial Navy. I guess that every nation has a certain type of larger rowing boat used to transport guests/the officers or to finetune the seamen's ability to sail and function. Just yesterday I saw the Flensburg Navy Cadet School doing training sails with their new cutters (now plastic cutters) in the Flensburg Fjord.

The design of the classic "Marinekutter" is the same as the ones from the Imperial Navy.

HELGOLAND Imperial Navy Cutter
http://www.fky.org/yachtsportarchiv/klassennotizen/jugendwanderkutter/0011.jpg

Right after the war, many sailing clubs thought it a good idea to train their youth with such vessels, so a "Jugendwanderkutter" (Youth wandering cutter) was invented. Much less heavy with lighter oars and a different centerboard it was the perfect vessel for training young people.

The Jugendwanderkutter

I know that there are similar designs in Denmark (with spitsails) and England (doubleenders). How about Brasil and the US?

The Royal Navy had a very similar "cutter" as a large ship's boat, but generally used the Montagu Whaler, with a very similar rig, for training - these also were often taken up by youth organisations after WW2.

This one belongs to our fellow-Forumite Dick Wynne:

Funny that you guys have used doubleenders, whereas "we" scandinavian countries have always used boats with a straight stern. Somewhow this is the wrong way around.

What about the US Navy?
