I received an email about a schooner that was sunk in shallow water off the coast of Ghana. All they wanted was a small donation to help refloat her so I sent my banking info. Figured it was for a good cause.

This guy is way out there. It's a wonder he even knows of an address to send money to. His email is to harry, but he goes by larry(no caps). There just might be a very different story going on here. Here's some examples of his responses to me from his other local (Seattle) CL listings over the last couple months:

"yes for free, its listing yes needs simi pro salvage , team, with float bags,, and trash pump, was caught in storm,, , are you intrerested 1930 tug , no eng no fuel tanks, floating , was house boat conversion, , "

Or:

"thank you for the reply, question,, are you in marine salvage business, , pump,, towing non running vessils,, I have couple pros going to vessil at mc harbor .barlow bay lopes island south of island the first one to tow vessil away, gets , 79 ft historic tug, as is , with doct, the first caller was not experienced told me he had access to tug tower vessil he was not experienced , it was my fault, so may the first one there ,, and tow , vessil away,, ,,,, I doing this because I have no tow vessil,, , and the local marina wants vessil gone, its ancored 3000, yards more from marina , and again thank you for your reply,,,,"

And the last:
"are you a tug boat operator,, on whitbey,, seakin operator for small yank job,, , betty b ,, or doy know operator for salvage yank,,"

What's a small yank job? Sounds like a tug to me in any language!

I'm pretty sure I've seen that "tug/schooner" on her mooring in Macay(?) harbor at the South end of Lopez. Obviously an "interesting" history and pedigree. Classic, pretty lines. Been there, with no sign of ever having moved, for years. That being said, I'm not sure what was keeping her afloat. Basically a stripped, stern heavy, weed encrusted, bare, rotten hull with no superstructure, rigging, gear or hardware left aboard. Several gapping holes in her deck open to the weather. In other words, "cosmetically challenged". Kind of makes "WAWONA" http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/274348_wawona17.html on Lake Union look like a reasonable restoration prospect. Unless you're a seagull with no place better to take a dump, just run. Don't walk. Run!

(Oh, yeah... "Marina" in Macay Harbor? Huh? There's NOTHING in Macay Harbor but beautiful scenery, safe refuge, a few fishing boats and several decrepit looking, seemingly abandoned, "houseboats", a cool "shipwreck" on the beach and a small, rickety, public dock in shallow water. Not even any place to go ashore with the dingy to get a cup of coffee, a beer or a pack of cigarettes... God, I love it there!)

I can spell scam but larry in the email can't spell anything and his punctuation is off, too. Sounds hinky to me.

Can't say for certain, but I've always assumed it was an old tug. The hull shape seems to fit. Seems to me that was the "scuttlebutt" I heard in the local pub at Fisherman Bay too...

I would NOT send my banking information for anything requested by e-mail, even if UNICEF signs it!! so to speak. These scam people are now specializing and look for specific themes (boats, etc) to break the generosity of people. Perhaps the guy is in real need, but I have seen (and are sure you too) many e-mails with terrible spelling offering incredible businesses or asking you for money. If in doubt, don't answer.

I think I detected some irony in the post about sending bank details.

Jim D, tell me I'm right!
